Save me alittle time: Adjusting front drums

Save me alittle time: Adjusting front drums - 07/09/08 04:02 AM

I have a slight vibration/humm noise only when coming to a slow stop from my front drivers side hub. My question is do I need to tighten or loosen the brake adjustment star on that side to eliminate the noise?

I would open it up & check everything out & also see how much lining to drum clearance you have right now.

Wheel bearings hum.

No its not a front wheel bearing. It is a braking vibration noise. I have had everything replaced in the hub recently. I just thought that someone here might of went through the same and could advise to snug or loosen the pads to make it stop.

Do your brakes pull or grab?? If not leave the adjustment alone. Take off the drum and use some emory or sand paper and take the glaze off the shoes and see what happens.

If the bearings were replaced, and the brake shoes were not replaced and the drums cut maybe some of the slight grooves on the mating surfaces no longer align and are causing a vibration?

I had some vibration/noise from one of my front drums on my 71 Roadrunner. It was also grabbing and pulling hard right. I found the brake shoe lining contaminated with grease/oil. I had to replace the shoes. If your brake shoes were recently replaced I would just jack up each side and adjust to where the wheel will only make about a 1/2 turn when spun. Otherwise, pull the drum and inspect everthing.

Brake noise is almost never just caused by adjustment. You probably have something else going on.

have the shoes recently been replaced? Did you have the drums turned? Did whoever turned them "cut back" the ridge inside?

As others have said, grease, oil, etc on the lining is a big cause. Also, new shoes DO take some time to seat. It might be helpful, if these are new shoes, to have them "arced" IF you can still find anyone with an arcing machine

Heck just dirt or a small stone in the drums will/can cause some noise.
