Imperials and C-bodies - - 10/01/09 02:04 PM

Are Imperials considered C-body or are they there own stand alone class? 1972 in particular.

Thanks,
Ron

Y body. Commonly accepted as a C-body as I understand it.

Some of them are D-bodies but can't remember which ones. Imperials have LOTS of Imp-only parts, so if you're buying one be aware of that.

if i remember right, imps were y bodies until 1970 when they were changed to c bodies. there was no physical change between these years. i used to have a 69 imp, try finding disc brake pads for early 69 and earlier imps. late 69 and newer pads are easily found.

i have a '71... the front clip is different than a c-body polara or fury. look in the fsm the control arms, spindles, and subframe are different, and the torsion bars are longer. 5 x 5" wheel bolt circle. CV joints on the driveshaft. i ordered a c-body front sway bar from firm feel and it was totally different, sent it back with my original and they bent me up a custom 1-1/4" bar that fits perfectly. c-body shocks fit, tti c-body headers fit. 1969-74 were the same car probably? hope this helps

Your '72 is a C body, as are all '67-'74 Imps. No such thing as a "Y" body, Y is the code for MAKE (C for Chrysler, D for Dodge, P for Plymouth, W for Coronet, etc.)

Not really. I've usually heard them considered D bodies

67-68 Is still it's own animal, almost nothing interchanges with a C body, body, brakes, frame, suspension even wheel bolt pattern is all different.

'69-73 are similar to C bodies, but have a longer wheel base with a different front frame and longer T bars. Still have their own brakes and bolt pattern. Similar body and interior though.

'74-75 are pretty much the same as C bodies. They lost their uniqueness by then, the 75 Imperial styling was then used for 76-78 New Yorker.

I agree 69 to at least 71 the front ends are different.Just try and find an Idler arm for a 70 71 Imp.One guy bought one on the 70 Imps that I had just for the Idler and some other parts for his 71.New idler arm was 500 bucks.Lots more than a normal C body.I owned like 6 Imperial and the 66 was probally my favorite. It was total black and looked like a funeral car.Rocky

Thanks everyone!
I have a 72 Imperial 2-door hdtp and no other C-bodies. I have a complete 1970 6-pack engine I'd like drop in a 70 Newport (painted like a Hurst) or a 70/71 Fury made into a Sport Fury. Owning the Imperial and no C-bodies, I didn't know much about the crossover between the two since I'm headed into the Newport/Fury world.
Thanks for the info!

I guess this could be debated ,if you check all parts books up to 1975,body plates list all Imperials as Y body. Also, the 73 Imperial has a 126.5" wheelbase where as the rest of the Chrysler line is 123.5".So it actually is one of it's own.
