bad experience with moog bushings??? - 09/29/09 07:40 PM

i placed all new bushings from moog in my front end 2 1/2 years ago. the car has only been in the garage (no engine) . but whem i looked today the upper controle bushings and lower arm bushings are complete dehydraded .

i am not happy with that , the front end is complete sandblasted and painted .

is this normal with moog?

my next bushing are polyurethane bushings . no moog anymore..

Even worse, I did mine about 1 1/2 years ago and the UCA bushings now look worse than the ones I removed. Interesting that you brought this up because I was just looking at mine last night. Mine are not on the car either but stored inside a climate controlled garage.

I have seen similar problems not only with Moog but everyone else too.Outsourced rubber parts from China seems to be the issue. I will only use the Made in the U.S.A rubber bushings by Dana Corp.I have a similar problem with rack bushings that look worse in a year than the 15 year old parts I removed.

That's not good news.

What's the brand name? Who sells them?

It's not China, it's probably India (don't want China to be the ONLY place to get bad press). That's where all motor mounts seem to be made these days. And they do exactly as described. This has been going on long enough for the GOOD manufacturers (like Moog once was) to figure it out, but it seems that they have their blinders on and are keepin' on................

Thanks for the correction Jim.India,China Thailand etc are all the same poor product. It's all about profits now ,so buyer beware.Dana does seems to have a higher quality and priced line that still has good rubber parts in it.

What brand name are the Dana parts made under?

I rest my case about a post I put up a month or so ago. If it's more difficult for me to get USA. Then I'll try it any way.
These foreign countries are all laughing to the bank while we roll into the blood banks for transfusions after an accident stemming from bad parts.
I'm open for open competition, but make good parts and I will buy foreign or outer space for that matter.

Every brand Mopar Lower control arm I've seen has "Harris" molded into the side of it. My guess is there is only one manufacturer for this particular part.

I've had my Moog 7103 offset upper control arm bushings on my Barracuda since 1993. Car aligned fine. Bushings didn't look chunked up to me.

Car has been outside in Iowa four winters then outside in So Cal up until 3 years ago.

In 1993 you could still get good motor mounts, too.......... This is a recent (last 7-10 years) change and it's not good. We had a brand new engine side motor mount for a FWD Mopar go bad while sitting inside of six months.

Wow, thanks for the info. I used Moog on my car and so far so good but that was only last year. I haven't checked them lately but when they wear out I guess I'll have to go poly too.

I've got some brand new poly upper bushings that I will likely use in my Barracuda when I get to that point. I've left the front suspension sagging while working on the body for lack of a better place to store it.

I thought there was an issue using polys on the LCA?

Don't remember the reason.

Fact or Fiction?

Re: bad experience with moog bushings??? - 10/02/09 01:06 PM

Jim, Mine aren't even in and look like crappo. I think I might just pull them and put Poly in also. As far as I know, the poly issue was twofold. First, on the LCAs you leave the metal sleeve in with the poly bushings, you replace it with the rubber bushings. Replacing it sucks but they do make a tool now that makes it much easier. Second is that some folks say the poly makes the front squeaky. That is all I have heard. I bought Moog because they were suppose to be the best. Now they are on the "you P!ssed me off" list.

Poly's will give you a harsh ride , one potential issue with polys is movement of the control arm at the bushing since it's a slip fit .

Dana bushings, meaning Spicer? I put Moogs only in my car and anything I work on, but I have noticed that the ones in my dart don't look good. I replaced them a couple years ago and haven't really driven the car much at all

Also I have noticed tha tthe made in india motor mounts are crap , don't last very long at all

That's gotta be it?

In the last few years I have been getting Moog parts that looked like they were sitting on a shelf for a long time - instructions turning yellow, boxes looked beat up. Maybe they shifted production off shore after they cleaned out the warehouse? I'm going to be pulling the front end apart for some mods on my 66 Coronet. I put Moog in everything, I think I better take a close look at them.

Re: bad experience with moog bushings??? - 10/02/09 08:05 PM

Moog's the first that comes to mind when replacing front end parts, but aparently not anymore when it comes to bushings. I have energy suspension bushings and also noticed a better ride. The trick is to make the suspension do the work and not body flex absorb the bumps. That's what causes the bad ride. I guess could be tires contributing also.

The poly bushing squeaked on mine and now, I either spray pb blaster or wd 40 on it once in a while to free things up.Now that I think of it, it's been 6 whole months since I needed to.

When putting control arms on, I tightened them to where the arm would very slowly drop under its own weight with the teflon grease. I wanted the front end to rise freely at the track plus to allow suspension, again, to work.

I replaced all four tie rod ends in my Aspen this summer with new (sealed in the plastic) Moog pieces. All four boots have split completely open after only three months. Total garbage.

Re: bad experience with moog bushings??? - 10/03/09 05:43 AM

I put poly on everything but my LCA's. The LCA's are McQuay-Norris brand. I'll find out how they perform once I get the car running.

Re: bad experience with moog bushings??? - 10/03/09 09:32 AM

have not used there bushings but i cant get why they cant install the grease fittings into frontend parts that require them, not that i cant do it myself buit i just dont get why they cant get the thing screwed in while assembling the rest of the parts instead of sending it in a litle plastic bag....
