79 Dodge Truck Not Getting Fuel

79 Dodge Truck Not Getting Fuel - 09/28/09 06:27 PM

I have a 79 Dodge truck that isn't getting any fuel to the carb but the fuel pump works. I can only assume there is something wrong with the sending unit. Any ideas?

Also, when I bought the truck it ran just fine. Got the truck home and he keeps wanting to run off what sounds like 6 cylinders (v8 truck). There was only one time after doing a compression test that it ran strong and sounded good. An hour later I went to drive it and it was back to the 6 cylinder feeling. Any ideas? I have even went so far as to put a points distributor in it to get rid of all electronics to see if it would help and no it did not. Thanks guys

Check the fuel filter and the lines at the tank.My Ramcharger did pretty much the same thing. The steel line on the sender was rotted away. Are you sure the pum is pumpimg?Ive also seen them where the eccentric on the cam was worn and wouldnt let the pump work right.Easy to find out.Just get a gas can and some hose and feed the pump from it.Rocky

Thats how I know the fuel pump is working because of the gas can and long hose idea. Looks fairly difficult to get the gas tank out, yikes!

Agree on full inspection of steel and rubber fuel line. If the truck did alot of sitting, it may have rotted the actual sender pipe inside the tank, causing it to suck air. Also may have plugged the sock on sender.

As said give every inch of line a good checking over esp the neoprene sections. Might not have to R&R the tank & more than likely the sending unit (at least the line part of it) is fine & the pinhole leak is further downstream if this is a fuel delivery problem. EDIT forgot about the sock possibly being plugged & if so just blow it off or make a hole in it w 100 lbs of shop air w your rubber tipped nozzle. If the sock is blown off it will not cause any problem floating around in there & just (as always) use a good filter up front.

My Ram Charger was a roach plow truck. The shield was imposible to get off as it was like 19 degrees and had gas all over it.I figuyred out where the sender was and cut a flap in the floor to remove it.All my lines to the pump were good but the steel out of the sender had rotted thru.New sender bent the flap back down and I was plowing again.Rocky

I will add my vote to the sender tube, as it curls out of the top of tank..
My 87 Ram had the same problem..

when ever i think i have a fuel problem i rig up i small gas can under the hood (pass fender works best) then i can test drive,it may idle fine but the real test is on the road on the gas! sometimes u can blow air into the hose u unhooked by the fuel pump & see if you can hear it in the tank
