I don't understand your question. What engine are you working on? What kind of distributor?
Normally, distributor caps "dont hit" the valve cover. "They" are just made that way

the rule of thumb is 2.5 inches for every terminal on the cap.

its a 383 with a msd distributor and fabricated aluminum valve covers. I can get a credit card in between the cap and valve cover? How much clearance is acceptable?

with my victor heads I had to grind the valve cover to get a credit card in there.

I had to grind the Mopar Performance aluminum B/RB valve covers alot when I installed a Pertronics billet distributor. A credit card gap would have made me happy.
