Shifting Point - 09/22/09 12:00 AM

I have a strong 440 - 6 pack with a hemi stall converter and the trans is rebuilt and has a shift kit in it. My question is that it doesn't have a hard neck jerking shift and if I want it to shift at say 6000 rpm's I have to move the shifter at about 4500 rpm's or it goes higher in the rpm's. What is the problem? I don't understand the high rpm difference.

Thanks

It doesn't shift crisp, the rpm flares when it goes to shift?

hi
1. check your fluid level in N on the level

2. does itdo this in both shifts ? 1-2, 2-3 ?

3. 1-2 may be a band adj ?

2-3 low fluid level , preasure loss from bad seal , burnt clutch pack ?

what fluid , and is it fresh , also a cloged filter ?

4. valve body kit incorectly installed , kickdown linkage improperly adjusted .

let us know .

The lack of a neck-jerking shift can be attributed to lots of things like converter, axle ratio, vehicle weight, etc.

The high rpm shifting might be the throttle pressure linkage adjustment, try backing it off a little to seee if it will shift at the desired rpm.

What is the best way to adjust the linkage I've heard different ways of doing it. It has a Hemi street converter with 410 rear gears in a 3800 lb 72 RR

Thanks

If it has 3-piece linkage just shorten the top rod by threading the slotted end into the rod, this will make it shift sooner.

He's not worried about the shift RPM, he's worried about how it takes so long to shift, and is such a soft shift, I don't think the "kick-down linkage" is the issue, I think it's something internal to the trans...as said--bands, clutches, fluid, etc.

Maybe I didn't explain it right. When I take it through the gears shifting it by hand is when I don't get the hard shift and when I shift it at 4500 rpm's it goes into the next gear at about 6000rpm's. I'm used to moving the lever and it shift's to the next gear right away.

Then it sounds like throttle pressure..
