Brewers rebuilt shifter mechanism - 09/21/09 08:08 PM

Purchased a rebuilt hurst shifter mechanism and there's no hole in the the reverse lever to put the alignment tool all the way through. I just called them and they said allot of them came that way from the factory with no hole. Is this true, and how would you ever adjust it correctly?

I know on my '68 RR the factory Hurst shifter had no alignment hole in the reverse lever.

Here's what I did.

Make sure the trans is in neutral.

Next, align the 1/2 and 3/4 levers with an alignment pin (drill bit).

Attach the shifter rods to the levers on the trans and the levers on the shifter.

Once the 1/2 and 3/4 rods are attached while the alignment pin is still in, then allign the reverse lever of the shifter to a somwhat alignment with the 1/2 and 3/4 levers.

Then attach the rod to the lever on the trans.

Not sure this is the way the factory did it but my shifter hasn't had a problem in the last 5 years.

Hope thie helps

Frank

The factory tool uses a rod for the two outer levers and simply aligns the sides of the Reverse lever with the outer two.

Thats the tool , I MADE one out of a chuck of 6061 ...

The Thru hole for reverse on Mopar shifter was added later on , not sure exactly when but the NOS shifter box I bought a number of years ago , it has a nut on the side for a grease zerk to be installed , has the thru hole, it makes the arm a little longer though.

You can simply forget the tool and adjust the rods so the levers match up with the boss that hangs down from the outside of the mechanism housing. Thats all I do, run my fingers across until I am satisfied with them all being in-line. Works fine.
