1970 383 HP Intake question - 09/19/09 07:56 PM

Why is it that casting number 2951666 came in two variations? See pic and link to one in ebay auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PLYMOUTH-...d=p4506.c0.m245 This specific casting number comes back to a 1970 RR,GTX,383 4-brl carb application but why are they different where the carb bolts on??

Don't have a clue. The one I have on my 72 RR is just like the one in your pic, but the casting number is 3614014. How did you find out what application the casting number was for?

AVS pattern vs. Holley pattern maybe? Measure the carb base pattern & that may be the answer.

I just looked this up in GG's white book

#2951666 1970/71.."B,C,E" body...383 - 1-4bbl

#3614014 1972....."B,C" body.....440 - 1-4bbl less N95

"Edit" Seller may hve missread the casting and may not be what it says it is.

"Re-Edit" Just notice 2nd photo of e-bay item...sure looks like the right #

69 back 383 intakes had the four holes. Or spreadbore for thermoquads. The slotted openings were 70 and up. The one shown on ebay is correct part number. The four hole (carter AFB ) intakes are a different part number

Both manifolds I am showing you guys are a casting number 2951666 which show for 70/71 383 4-brl engines. One has the 4 holes, the other has the long slots. Trying to find out why now??.... Hopefully this makes better sense?. Thanks for posting guys but still not following as to why?

Re: 1970 383 HP Intake question - 09/19/09 10:49 PM

I only see the casting number on the 70 intake. I think there is a mistake with part number on the 4 hole. They do not have the same part number. Regular 4 bbl intakes for 70 are a different part number then HP intakes.

Doug,

There are two photos of the E-Bay manifold. The second photo shows the casting number pretty plain. I missed the second photo the first time I looked.

Very odd indeed. Never seen 2 different parts with same part number.

Could be, but you think there would be different part numbers.

Could there be different part numbers yet the same casting numbers?

It is odd, maybe production date early had 4 hole, later had the 2 oval openings?
My friend with a '70 383 'cuda just had his carb off and it was the 666 casting with 4 holes. I have 2 666 casting off motors with two oval openings, I should check the dates, might be 71's.

FWIW...My original bought as new by my Dad 70 Road Runner(built in 8-69) has the 666 intake and it has the oval shaped carb pad.

If I am am not mistaken, they changed carbs halfway through 70.On my 70, 383,roadrunners at least.Depending on your build date ,either carter or holly.Maybe thats it???

I just bought (2) 666 manifolds. The first is a 666-1 (with oval holes) that I bought from Carlisle this year. Then I got lazy and bought a complete 666-2 with Holley carb and choke thermostat from the swap meet here on Moparts. This one supposedly came off a '71 car.

My March 70 LA Built Road Runner 383-4 has the 666 manifold with 2 elongated slots versus 4 holes....

Re: 1970 383 HP Intake question - 09/22/09 03:08 AM

I seem to remember the 1968-9 383 intake had the four holes. I'm thinking it is a very early 1970 intake. I have one with the oval slots (buried in my pile of parts somewhere). I can't claim to be an expert on BB engines though.

Re: 1970 383 HP Intake question - 09/22/09 01:17 PM

I'd be curious as to the casting date on that , as far as the 383 4 bbl having 2 different intakes , one for HP and one for the non HP 5hp lower rating , I'd like to see that in a parts catolog please , on a page with a 1970 date please .

That manifold has the lowered choke thermo housing so a holley would also bolt on to it .

I have a 666-2 with the 4 holes sitting in my basement. How do you know the date? There is some kind of code on the bottom that reads 10 X 29

Re: 1970 383 HP Intake question - 09/23/09 12:51 AM

Remember that the number you see on the intake is a casting number, not a part number. Perhaps they were both the same casting and machined different and got a different part number in the parts book?

Also 666 cast in large letters on the bottom of the intake.
