Did a windage tray save my engine???

Did a windage tray save my engine??? - 09/17/09 04:59 AM

I've posted before about having a weird oil pressure issue where it builds pressure at start up, then rapidly drops and fluctuates. It doesn't matter if I'm revving it or not. Last time it did this I found the issue to be a loose oil pick-up ( its a 360 by the way). I figured I must have messed up so I just replaced the pump and made sure the pick-up was tight. I thought I had the problem fixed, but after 30 miles of running, the problem came back. Finally today I got around to dropping the pan and checking the pick-up again. I found the pick-up pressed up tight against the bottom of my windage tray!!!!
First, how in the hell does an oil pick-up spin itself up against gravity?
Second, does Milodon warranty any of their stuff??
Third, if the windage tray wasn't there, do you think the pick-up would have hit the crank or a rod and really done some damage?

You aren't getting it tight enough. There is no way a properly tightened pick up will move. Unless the crank or a rod are hitting it and knocking it loose.

Sounds more like the pickup was loose and the pump started sucking air around the threads too. It's pipe thread so it has to be really tight to seal and stay put... Sounds like what was said. You are not tightening it enough.

There's no way I could tighten it anymore without breaking it. I ordered another one so maybe I'll do a little experiment with the old one.

If you can't tighten any more i would check the thread on the pump,If everything turns out good and you want added insurance i have seen guys tack weld the pick up.

Also when you found dropped the pan could you move the pick up by hand??

Sounds like you may have already broke it - the pump that is. Look for cracks around the threads in the pump. Put the next one in with red loctite.

A little tack weld will keep it in place.

Yes I could move the pick-up by hand. The end of the pick-up was up tight against the windage tray, but I was able to move it easily.
I don't think the problem is the pump because I replaced it last time I had this problem just to make sure. This is what's frustrating about it. If its not tight enough, it gets loose. If its too tight i break something! This shouldn't be this damn complicated. Its just a stupid pipe thread, but I'm sick and tired of pulling my damn engine to get the pan off every time to check it!

Put it all back in set pick up hieght to pan ( make sure oil pan gasket is on there, then take oil pump back out with pick up still on it, take oil pump apart, but put cover back on, weld the pick up on the oil pump, clean it, put it back in.
