Air Cleaner for Performer RPM

Air Cleaner for Performer RPM - 09/17/09 01:16 AM

Hello. I'm going to purchase the Edelbrock Performer RPM for my 440 that's in my 71 Road Runner pretty soon.

Before I do, I would like to know if a 3 inch filter will fit or a 2 inch filter and if I need a drop or flat base to have the air cleaner fit under my factory dual call-out hood.

I do not have the car with me to check measurements. What are the measurements that I need to run; taking in for instance: Net height from carb flange, filter height, drop distance and the distance I have to play from the top of the manifold plenum to the top of the hood?

I appreciate all your help.

Thanks,

Adam

It's very tall, and since you should always run a carb spacer (or thick gasket) you'll need to find a drop base assembly. Summit has a 1 3/4" drop base K&N style for around $50. I had one for this 440 build before I went w/ the 6-pack. I even added a 440 pie tin decal to it.

Why should you ALWAYS run a carb spacer ?

John you need to run a drop base air cleaner , the RPM is tall , you don't want to run a shorter filter element unless you absolutely have to .

why should you? I guess if you want your carb sitting on a very hot intake you don't have to. You should always insulate your carb. Spacer might be the wrong word. A simple paper gasket isn't enough.

Chances are you will need a drop base. K&N has a 2 1/2" drop base you can buy as a stand alone and add your own top, thats what I used on mine.

just remember the more drop the closer your carb throat is going to be to the lid...meaning 2.5" drop w/ a 3" element your carb is going to be awfully close to the lid.

65rbdodge, I live in the Sullivan County area. Where do you live at yourself? I'm surprised to see somebody from that region, well I guess I shouldn't, it's not such a small world anymore.

Thanks for the help fellows. I decided to go with a Mr Gasket drop base air cleaner with a 2in filter. Here is a link to the item:

Mr. Gasket Filter

Hopefully that's the ticket.

Thanks again,

Adam

With a drop base you should be able to get a 3" element on there . A board member had a 69 charger wit ha 440 and a street dominator , it had a flat base and 2" to clear the hood
