Which transmission rebuild kit?

Which transmission rebuild kit? - 09/15/09 03:18 AM

It looks like I may have to tear down the 46RH transmission in my 92 D250. If so, who's stuff should I use? It's a Cummins with a mild pump tweak 119,000 miles ago and that's it. Nothing insane.
The stock tranny has made it through 269,000 miles so I think a simple rebuild would work. There's no need for race parts.

I know these things need good tight converters. The stock item stalls around 2000 rpm and has no lock up. Peak torque is 1900 rpm. Redline is 2400 rpm. Nice planning wouldn't you say? It's of no consequence because I really can't afford one right now.
There's no trash in the pan so I don't need to worry about it building up in my converter. Hopefully, I will be able to repair the transmission before friction material ends up everywhere.

So, where should I look for a low budget kit? What should I expect to pay for it?
I see one listed at RockAuto.com for $149.

You need a special spring compressor to remove/install the overdrive clutches.
PACT has the tools and some nice upgrades. They were really good with shipping and giving me 10% off their listed prices when I bought some parts from them.

You may want to look at item #8S, the Overdrive Mega spring, a bit pricy at $66, but this is what holds the transmission in gear when not in overdrive.

Kevin I think the diesel has the 47RH and in 92 would it have been called the 618 ?

Anyway you want a GOOD set of frictions , the low priced Kits don't have the good frictions and with your truck turned up a hair that would be the better way to go , Borg warner Hi engery would be my choice , if the 92 doesn't have the later diesel friction count in the OD section I would upgrade to that also ? Is there a Transtar local to you ? you can buy the kit from them , should be no more than 300 bucks with the good frictions.

What's the redline and what is the RPM for HP peak of the truck ? The HP peak was were Chrysler set the stall on the second gen trucks , past the torque peak , it was a pisspoor bandaid to try and save a trans that really has no business being behind the Cummins ...

Transtar is all I use as well.

They usually use Raybestos clutches.

I've beat the Pi$$ out of a a couple of these and then tore them down for maintenance and they looked brandy new!

It does have the 47RH/618 but so few people know what they are. I have not torn it down but it should have the additional disc and 5 gear planetary on the OD section.
Redline is 2400 rpm. Stall is around 2000 rpm and torque peak is 1900.

The $300 kit sounds nice but I can't afford that and probably won't be able to for some time.

I'm seriously considering pulling the OD section off and going through it for now. I know that's only doing half the job and will likely cost me more in the long run.
