727 differences

A guy who was looking to buy a big block 727 from me wants it to match his small block 727 length so he doesn't have to change the driveshaft. He says his small block 727 measures 31 inches, I have 3 big block 727's a long shaft, short square but rounded tail shaft from a motor home and one with a shaft with an ebrake drum on the end, also form a motor home. Did a big block 727 ever come with a tailshaft that would make it only 31 inches? I assume the big blocks would be wider and longer because they are for the big blocks. -BD

The drive shafts will swap from a BB to a SB. The tail shafts on both trans are the same as is the the frame where the trans cross member bolts. You can't determine anything by measuring the over all length becuase the engines don't sitt in the the same places.

727's that were in cars and pick ups both big and small blk are same size only difference is the bellhousing bolt pattern, same mount locations and driveshaft size and length[ excluding some motorhome stuff] all 727's internally big or small blk are pretty much same and interchange parts easily including flex plates and convertors, starters and cooling lines,linkage etc. Hope this helps you out.....Ken

check from back of case to the tranz mount

my 79 MH 727 with a bolt on yoke was 5" from case to mount

car/truck 727 are 7" from case to mount

measure from back of main case where the tail shaft bolts on to center of mount

I had to move the mount to put it in my 85 truck

he can have the out put shaft and tail housing swaped from the SB to the BB case also,to make it right

I thought they are all the same and had never seen any different ones,till I got the MH 727...they are a diff breed all together sometimes

mine had some lugs on top of tail shaft,that stick up for some type of mount that would hang it,I had to cut them off,they hit the floor pan when I set the cab on the frame

Sounds like his original trans is a 904 not a 727.

Yep. He will need to change the driveshaft if his measurement is only 31".
