Where to buy a speedometer pinion gear?

Where to buy a speedometer pinion gear? - 09/07/09 04:14 PM

Anyone have a good lead on where to purchase a speedometer pinion gear? In my 63 plymouth I switched over to 3.91's and speedo is way off. I am running the original 63 auto trans and need to find the correct gear which I believe is an 8 by 20 toothed gear? Help.

Picked up my last one off ebag for about $10. Here is a conversion chart I ran across. Good Luck

It "may" still be a "dealer-item." The last one I bought, was from a local dealership parts department.

I believe Year-One sells them too. They are "color-coded," There should be a link about them in the Moparts Tech archive, top of this webpage.

I've always bought them at a dealer, I'm sure there's other places that have them.

Brewers Performance www.brewersperformance.com has them, you might want to ask them if they will work in automatics or not.

Not so easy to find. 1965 and down are different gears IIRC. Might want to check here: http://www.partshp.com/speedometer_gears.htm

I was wondering that too...

Transmission part suppliers are the cheapest. The dealer wanted $60 for the one I needed, got it at D&E Transmission Supply for $17. They are located in Hazel Park Michigan.

You picked up the pre 65 pinion? or post?

Cause pre's are rare, used or NOS only is what I've seen.

Funny thing, I never got one email on a NOS 2538932 (66 and later years) gear I have for sale here on Moparts for $25 and the dealer wants $79 for the same thing.

Very hard to find any speedometer gears for 1962 to 1965 cable shift (pushbutton) transmission. Here's the info from the 1965 parts book. 1963 info is the same. The factory never made a gear for the B bodies with 3.91:1 ratio. You had to use an adapter made by stewart warner to have a correct speedometer reading.

Hi,
Would you be interested in selling the one you have? How many teeth are on yours?
Thanks

what rear end ratio will that fit? reason I ask - I'm finishing up a 65 barracuda and have 3.73 rear gears and I know the speedometer gear I've got is wrong. thank you.

You can use any gear ratio/tire diameter calculator but you need to use 8 teeth as the drive gear for the '65 and earlier 727 instead of 13 like the '66 and later.

The early 904 and light duty standard transmissions have 7 teeth on the drive gear.

As stated earlier, high numeric gear ratios most often need a reduction unit unless the tires are large in diameter.

Wow ...what a can of worms I opened up putting the lower gears in. I am only gonna guess that one of those stewart warner adapters are NOT easy to come by?

Got a idea, get a GPS and use it for your speedo.

I've checked mine with those roadside radar signs and I know it's 10 mph fast.
I've got two cars with 3:23's and 235-60-15's and they are both off by 10 mph.

Imperial Services makes the reducers any size you want. They arent cheap though.I have 3.91s in the 65 and my speedo is only about 10 % off.I believe I have an old Mopar reducer in the other garage.Bought it and never installed it.Ill have to find it and see if it is as Im going back to 4.88s or 4.56 and with those the speedo is way off.Oh I have seen some list the newer gears as fitting the 65 backs. They dont.Rocky

what john says! they never made a "3.91" pinion gear for the '65 and earlier tranny. a .80 reducer and a 21 tooth pinion are very close. only problem is 21 tooth pinions are near impossible to find. a 19 tooth pinion and a .70 reducer ( if imperial services makes one) would be close. be prepared to pay a couple hundred bucks for a reducer and speedo cable.
