Auto body/paint guys - 09/04/09 10:01 PM

Just thought I'd try to get some answers incase you guys have experience with these products. if no one knows, I'll just wait till after the weekend and call their tech line (website says open till 6 eastern, and at 5, I got a message said "Our offices are closed" --lousy 3 day labor day weekend!)

I've got a hood that I'm going to re-paint on my Dakota, basically doing some touch up work, this is my first "real" paint work using real paints with hardeners, a real paint gun, etc. so I'm using this hood to learn and get some practice with.

My dad said he had some Napa products that I could use and save some money, he has clear coat #15401 and Hardener #15448, left over from some work he did on my sisters car.

So, I went to Napa and said "I have clear 15401 and hardener 15448, I need a base coat compatible with these products in a Dodge paint code PR4"

they gave me a can of 56-46916-B and NO other paperwork.

I assume that I have a can of base coat "cross fire platinum B/C 5.0" as the martin senour website says that's what that code is. but, under that system, it does NOT say that I can use clear coat #15401 with it, nor does it specify exactly which reducer to use.

so, Long story short...is my base coat compatible with my clear coat, and which reducer should I get (assuming temps of 70-90) or did the Napa guys sell me the wrong crap, and now I gotta go get different clear and hardener than what my dad has?

Alot of the Napa paint products are made by Sherwin-Williams.

I've not used any current Napa or SW products BUT

Best advice I could give is to search SW website or have the counter guys give you copies of the product sheets (P Sheets) for each product.

Also, many hardeners go "bad" after they have been opened.

There is usually a date on the can, if any doubt don't risk it!

The base may just use a Reducer{not laqure} to thin it out to a sprayable paint with not bring to thin or thick state. So you need to know what thinner it is and how much.
Or it may be like PPG base that does that but also is "reactive reducer{like a hardener does}
It will also go on in 3-4 coats almost dry to just give the color.
Some base shoots dry as a laqure would.
Some go on wet looking but flash to a dull look.
Basicly you are just coloring the suface with the base and they clear gives the shine.
Lights coats of base are hard to make run and if ypu get some in the clear they are easy to sand out.
Thats why I do not understand the guys that post the are shooting single stage on door jambs, under hood, inside trunk, engine bay.
And Base clear on the put side. Gives a bad paint line, as well as differant shade.
