Valvetrain Pre-lube Question; Camshaft Position?

I'm getting ready to pre-lube my engine and want to get a generous amount of oil up to the new roller rockers. What is the clock position to line up the passages in the cam bearings to oil the heads? I can't seem to find the info in any of my books.

What I did, and it's kind of a pain, was to have one person turn the engine through several complete revolutions while the other ran the drill to pre-lube the motor.

Appreciate the recommendation. I was going to turn the crank over while I primed it but wanted to leave it in the 2 head oiling positions to get a good amount of oil up there initially. Knowing the approximate clock postions will get me in the ballpark for lining up the passages without overshooting it a few times.

Try this.

At TDC on #1 cylinder the oil holes should be lined up with the passenger side rocker arms.

The drivers side holes should line up 300 crank shaft degrees after TDC on #1 cylinder. CCW rotation from front of engine.

I'd go with what 57 said. With someone running the drill, within 2 crank revolutions, you will find it.

It's pretty obvious when the cam lines up with the empty passage. You'll hear lots of slurping noises. Try it with the oil filler cap off.

Thanks all. I will find/verify the two head oiling crank positions by rotating the crank while priming.

Why not just use the starter (with the plugs out)?

I use the drill to prefill all the passages and get pressurized oil into the bearings and passages, then drop the distributor shaft in and spin it with the starter until everything's wet.

On a small block it is very easy to use the drill and it will stabilize itself against the fire wall while you turn the engine over using the relay contacts. I like to prime for at least a minute to make sure that all the air is bled out of the system. Make sure to have the oil filter on. Heck of a mess if you don't. DON'T EVEN ASK

I used a set of valve covers the the tops cut off.(for setting the valves on a fresh engine) Turned the drill on and left it running and turned the crank till I seen the oil coming out. Never even thought on checking the timing marks.

Thanks for the input gents. Primed the 360 this evening and got good flow of oil up through the valve train. Passenger side rockers oiled at crank TDC, drivers side oiled at approximately 570 crank degrees passed TDC (a little beyond 1 1/2 crank revolutions, 7 o'clock position). Hopefully I'll get the engine back in my RC within the week.

After all the turning I take the rocker arms/lifters/pushrods back off & put more lube on the cam then reinstall the above.
