Trouble removing horn trim ring???

I feel like a moron posting this but here goes.
Is there a trick to removing a horn trim ring? (69 coronet) other than "turn counterclockwise" as the manual states?? Tried pushing and pulling while doing this w/ no luck. Dont want to scratch the wheel up but I am beginning to lose patience.

See that Dodge emblem it the middle of the steering wheel? use a small screwdriver, slip it under an edge & carefully pry that part out... then you'll know whats next...

If the manual was correct you'd be done by now...
