Throttle Cable Removal

Throttle Cable Removal - 08/25/09 09:48 AM

I need to remove the throttle cable from my '69 Road Runner and I'm having difficulty. The cable is off at the pedal and the C-clip is removed from the inside firewall. I thought it should just pull out at that point and it doesn't. It's pretty tight when I try to pull it out. I removed both bolts from the engine side firewall plate that the cable goes into and it remained on the firewall. In fact it looks like it's welded on to the firewall but that could be painted sealant. Do I need to take that plate off to get the throttle cable out? If no what could be holding it up?

There should be a bracket that unbolts or a C clip holding it to the firewall.Rocky

Peel that sealnt off, clear it out, see if there's one more clip under there as Rocky says. Then yank it out - maybe the grommet is holding fast! You won't break it.

Thanks for the replies. The C-clip above the accelerator pedal has been removed. The cable seems to be hanging up on a rubber grommet but I am not sure. I kind of tore it trying to pull it off the cable. This is on the inside of the car. On the outside firewall there is a diamond shaped bracket with two bolts. I removed the bolts but the bracket is tight against the firewall. The whole area has been painted so I can't tell if the bracket is welded onto the firewall or there is simply some sealant around the edge. I will try to find this out tonight.

Well it's out. I worked a knife and then a screwdriver under the bracket and scratched the hell out of my paint but got the bracket off the firewall a little bit. The darn thing pulled right out. I guess it was just hung up on the bracket and when it was separated the cable came free.
