Ever change one on this car? Can anyone give any helpful hints? It seems way more involved than a water pump on a small block or big block.......

I'm assuming it's a 2.0 sohc. Either way, it runs off the timing belt. I personally would replace the timing belt and cam seal while you're in there. They have an updated retainer for the cam seal if it hasn't already been done. Other than that and the timing covers and motor mount, it shouldn't be too bad.

Have a good quality (or heavy) crank puller. Those are hard to get off.

And do not use the pulley retaining bolt to pull it off with. Get a new grade 8 bolt that slips into the hole and bottoms out. You will need a service manual in order to time it and to compress the tensioner. One last thing; remove the bolt from the front lower motor mount so that you can raise and lower the engine as much as possible. It will make wrestling off the pass side engine mounting plate easier.

Neon Timing Belt

This covers 2nd gen, but I believe it's pretty much the same hassle.

Thanks guys for the information. After reading up on this, I have made what I believe to be a wise choice.
My wife and I have our first born baby boy (4 months old) I have too much stress going on in my life to wrestle with this job - it looks like a major PITA

.....off to my local mechanic it will go on Thurdsay.......
