5.9 magnum coil? Heat shields?

5.9 magnum coil? Heat shields? - 08/24/09 04:16 PM

I am trying to bolt something to the side of the coil bracket, and noticed how close it is to the exhaust.
2000 durango.

Just wondering if that is an issue for the coil itself? Does it get too hot? Is there a heat shield?

If I bolt a piece of aluminum to the bolts that hold the coil onto the bracket, to sheild it, will it make it worse or better?

That is will the aluminum suck up more heat and carry it to the coil bracket?

the fan blows on it to cool it down, start it up and put your hand next to the coil, be careful not to get fingers in belt/fan.

only time i have had a issue is through water getting it wet, so now i have aftermarket coil in a sealed box on the inside fender mounted to a aluminum flat plate to help keep it cool, no more problems.

I am not running this stock, in a truck anymore.

I guess then my real question is an aluminum shield bolted to the coil, is that better or worse for heat?

yea, didnt you put this in a car about a year ago?

All the coil needs is cool air over it at all times while engine is running, if you can make something that does not get in the way of the air flow and does not put more heat into the coil, it would work. what that is, idk. i will look at my spare engine and see what i can come up with.

Not a problem with the factory coil placement and overheating,I do hate the long coil to cap lead and the fact that it's routed along a great, hot ground path.I move the coil and shorten the path.

Yep I did.
Painless was supposed to finish it but canceled the program.
So I had to bring the car back. But then I lost my job and couldn't justify spending money on it.

Now I am working again, and am trying to finish it.

I have to bolt a chevy spark control modual on the side.

I am bolting it to an aluminum plate I made. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to burn out due to that manifold right there.

thats should be fine, as they put them on top of the engine rite above the head, but i would find some isolaters to help not pull the heat from the block to the control modual.

It will hang off to the side bolted up to the same bolts that hold the coil to the bracket, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks.
