440 VAPOR SEPARATOR. - 08/06/06 12:26 PM
i upgraded my car to a 3/8 fuel line with a 1/4 return line, bought a 440 vapor seperator from year one.the car started running bad like it was staving for fuel, now it wont start unless you put gas directly into the carb,is my fuel pump bad or is the vapor seperator keeping fuel from my carb??

I would put a 3/8 in line filter in place of thes the new separator for test purpose. You'll have to plug the return hose during the test. Maybe it's sending too much back to the tank.
I bought a vapor separator from YO several years ago... same problem. You probably only have about 2 lbs. of fuel pressue right now.
The smaller fitting for the return is missing an internal restrictor. In other words... you got junk... return it if they let you.
From what I remember - the internal restrictor in that fitting / line is supposed to be about .040. but don't quote me.

I have an original separator on my car and no problems. If you can't see a restriction in the return stem of the separator you can just plug the thing completely, or perhaps braze it closed and then drill an .040 hole into it.
Best would be to return it and let the vendor know they are selling something that doesn't function, but that will probably cost you shipping and restocking fees to the point where it is just not worth it.

I ran into the same issue after adding my new 3/8" sending unit and then buying a 426/440 vapor separator off of YO.
I fixed it buy going to my local NAPA and buying their Gold #3054 filter/separator. It is an in-line fuel filter with a return line off of the side of it for $6. Then just clamp on your return line.

Hey Y07 A66!!!
thanks for that tip!
I was wondering the same thing, if they made such a filter!
Does it really matter where you install it? DOes it have to be mounted vertically where it originally sits on a 440+6 or can I mount it horizontally on top with the nipple facing upwards?
Thanks!
Gil
P.S. They don't make a clear one do they?

Just realized one dilemma...it has 5/16" inlet and outlet...
I'll check the store out and see if they have a 3/8"

Good note, I didn't know they had one with 3/8 nipples!!
I would guess that the vapor will rise to the top and the filter would have to stand vertical with the 1/4" return to the top.

Yep, my $65 YO unit is in my attic now. I was told by another member that they are making one of the holes in the piece too large allowing the fuel to run back thru to the tank. Too bad because they "look" like nice pieces. I bought mine two years prior to actually installing it so I couldn't send it back.

Thanks for the info and the NAPA part number - I have been planning to upgrade the fuel system on the Volaré to 3/8" line and this was one piece of the puzzle that was hard to find.

I also tried a NAPA 3041, with the nipple on the top. It did have an orifice installed looked like about .040 but it didn't work. It channeled fuel out the nipple.

This is an moldee oldee.
That's funny, the Y1 pieces were junk 10 years ago as well as I ran into the same problem on my six pack car.
I went with Bill Allphin on the last one.
Same price but it works.
