where to get new fuel gauge? - 07/02/08 12:30 PM

does anyone make new fuel gauges? i am pretty sure that mine is bad in the dash, i have done a few tests and the gauge does not move even after i ground out the sending wire. will this have to be fixed or replaced with a new one? any ideas, has anyone taken there dash apart and fixed it somehow? thanks again,
karl

No movement after grounding the sending wire does not necessarily mean the gauge is bad. You will have to remove the dash to test it though. If you have a battery charger, you can put it on the 6 volt setting or the lowest amperage 12 volt setting, put the ground to the instrument housing and briefly touch the positive to the appropriate lug sticking up from the pin circle on the circuit board. If the pins are secure, the gauge should rise to full. Dont let it peg and hold there!

Some common problems include loose pins (solder them in place to resecure them), corrosion at the little attaching nuts, or a bad voltage regulator(there are solid state ones available for purchase, or make your own-check the tech bulletins here)

There is an very good article on this subject in this month's(August) Mopar Muscle magazine. They do a step-by-step How-to on an inexpensive yet effective, 1967 Barracuda dash restoration.

I sent my gauges to Realtime Engineering and had them test calibrate and install their voltage regulator. Turn-around was quick, prices are very reasonable, and they updated my clock to quartz movement too. I have a 1968 Barracuda, and the voltage regulator is internal inside the gas gauge. It required a little more work to upgrade the voltage regulator. Great guys there!!! Highly recomended!!!

Thanks for the kind words JBC426!

To add to this discussion, you can also use a 9V battery across the gauge to find out if it is OK or not. As before, don't leave it on there very long, just long enough to see if the gauge moves.

If your fuel gauge is bad, we can usually rebuild it for $60.
