Using Dual Field Alt in a 69 and earlier car?

What method do you use to use the later altenator in the earlier cars? I have been told to remove one of the plastic washers on one of the field terminals with a metal one and ground it to the case, is this correct?

A short jumper wire from the 2nd field terminal to one of the (3) thin case bolts will work or pirate a grounded brush holder from an earlier alt or as you said eyeball it & change what you have to to make the brush holder grounded

1. There's but a single field - it's an isolated field alternator. Splitting hairs notwithstanding...

2. If you ground out one of the terminals internally (as opposed to making the ground an externally visible jumper), please, Please, PLEASE do something with the now grounded spade to render it unusable so that there will be no doubt that something different is going on internally. This is not just for you to remember to which spade the regulator's wire gets connected. It's also to save the next shmoe who might unknowingly find that alternator on his best friend's 1969 Super Bee, and melt some wires. DAMHIK.

Upgrade the wiring harness and use it to it's full potential with the 70up volt reg.

myself,I would go with the single wire alt that came on it,then upgrade the points style VR with a soild state replacement they have for them

made a world of diff with the 68 Dart, fixed the discharge at idle with the light on,and the amp gauge stop jumping around and was steady across the gauge sweep after that

uping the amps is not a good thing on the older sytem like that, imo

unless you bypass the amp gauge and up the wire to carry the extra juice you will have with a newer alt

Depends on what you mean by "later" model alt. This is a 120 amp denso from a 2001 Ram van, $13 at my local pick-n-pull on 1/2 price day along with a 70/later electonic voltage regulator ($12). Simple to make mounts and simple to wire. Feed goes to hot stud/remote mount battery, sensor wire goes to hot @ starter relay where I also pull power for all my relays. Very inexspensive and works perfectly.

I assume you want to put a dual field alt on your GTX's single field alt ?? Do you want to update to the newer style electronic regulator ?? It is so simple to do but we need to know if you want to stay with the old mechical type regulator or the newer (70's & later) electronic regulator ? Ron
