what cam to use,318? - 08/16/09 05:12 PM

I am not expecting to much from this, what I have is a 83 imperial that has the Mp electronic conversion,600 holley and a performer intake, everything else is stock, this is my daily driver.
I do not want to add anything else to it but the cam if it would even help.my questions,
can I get better performance from a cam change over stock?
recommendations?
I was thinking about edelbrock performer cam, would this be a good choice?
any advice?thanks

The small Summit SUM-6900 cam is a bargain at $98 and will wake that 318 right up. I am running a stock 318 with the summit cam, performer intake, and a TQ and it is impressive. This is the second 318 I have run this cam in and have not been disappointed in either of them.

I agree for a slight build the Summit cam will swap right in.Springs should even be good with it.Ive ran all their cams and for the price they cant be beat.90 bucks for cam and lifters was what I paid for the last one.Rocky

That little summit cam works great in a mild 318
I had a 72 dart Swinger with a 318, 3.55 gears, stock 360 exhaust manifolds & stock thermo-quad intake. the summit cam really woke it up! even had a nice slight rumble at idle. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-K6900/

Do you still have the stock 7.25" rear? If so, I think the J bodies had 2.24:1 gears them just like the M bodies. I'd swap out gears then before doing anything cam related.

2.94:1 geared 8.25" rear from a police package Diplomat or Gran Fury would be my next upgrade.

if you have 2.45:1 or 2.24:1 rear and want to keep it, stay conservative. I'd probably spend the extra coin and go for a lunati voodoo 60400, and comp 901 springs.

pull the cover and look on the ring gear for ratio..

2x on the voodoo cams with comp 901 springs

I run the 60710 roller

258/264
207/213
.485/.485 lift

works great in my 85 stepside truck

What he said...and go ahead and get a Timing chain set as well.

What kind of power range are you getting with that cam T2R9?

What's your peak rpm and did you change springs?

Anyone know just Who makes these "summit" brand cams?

I am leaning towards this one, with a power range from 1000 to 5000rpm, worth the extra bucks and comes with a timing chain as well as a reputable brand :

This one has a power range limited from only 1000 to 4000rpm : http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-K6900/

Crane makes those cams, and while it does say 4k it will probably pull up to 4500-4600.
The larger one would probably like a little stall and 3.55's.

My car pulls hard right up to 4500. I did not change my springs.

Re: what cam to use,318? - 08/17/09 07:31 PM

on my VooDoo roller cam, its power band is idle to 5500rpm

I been 6200 rpms with it and no valve float with the comp 901-16 springs

pulled right up to the 5500 mark, then nosed over the rest the way to 6200rpms

I wanted to see if it would float the valves and I shift at 4800-5000 rpms now

my 85 stepside merges in traffic with attude and is a great daily driver

600 eddy carb
LD4B eddy intake
60710 VooDoo roller cam
headers and 2.5 duel glass packs
A999 stock high stall lock up tranny
A-body 8 3/4 with 3.23sg
29x15x15 M/Ts

18-19 mpgs with it 80-90 miles daily

You may want to think about a Hughes Whiplash cams. They are designed to work in basically stock engines. Per Hughes, "They will increase your cylinder pressure, make a lot of torque and sound really wicked at an idle. Get on it a little and they will smooth right out and be very streetable."
