Has anyone's new clutch "dragged" before break-in? - 07/01/08 01:24 AM

I put a new clutch in,,,, Centerforce dual friction diaphram in the 340,,,, adjusted it up all nice,,, and when I first started it I couldn't get it into gear, and if I started it in gear it would creep forward a bit and I can here the disc dragging between the plate and flywheel. I drove it a bit and it seems to have gotten a bit better, but still not 100%. Is this normal?? If not, what is wrong? If I tighten the adjustment anymore there won't be any clearance between the throwout bearing and pressure plate. Everything else checks out good,,, linkages, fork, return spring, etc.....

Not that rare. Could actually be the pilot that is holding the input shaft. Just take the car for a ride and beat it up a little. More often than not, this will take care of the problem.

I had a similar problem with my new McCleod single disc and my Tremec 5 spd. In my case it started out shifting great. After about 500 miles I noticed that it was getting hard to shift. I adjusted the clutch rod quite a few times and everytime I did it would be fine for a while and then get bad again. I finally drew a mark on the rod and soon discovered the problem. The threads on the adjustment rod and nut are worn to the point that with the heavier pressure plate, the nut is slipping on the rod several threads at a time and creating too much slack in the clutch linkage. At least it's a simple and easy fix.

Beat on it today and the clutch is working great. I did break the rear u-joint. Luckily it stayed away from the floor,,,,, and it was fun doing it too!!!! So... a new yoke and a new joint and she's up and running again.

The new Moparts approved version of the television gameshow..."The Weakest Link" Sometimes breaking stuff can be fun...as long as it's nothing serious..
