340 electrical issues - 08/08/09 10:36 PM

Okay guys got a weird one, my 67 barracuda has a 340 I put in about a year ago. Runs really nice, no issues at all. About a month ago I was driving it one day for about 6 or 7 minutes, and it just died, like someone pulled the plug on it. I tried to start it and it would just turn over and not fire up, like it was'nt getting spark. I t then sat for like 20 minutes, and fired right up and drove fine for 3 or 4 weeks. I went to go for a cruise yesterday and it would not start. It would just turn over and over like it was'nt getting spark, so I pulled the spark plug and coil wire and no spark. I let it sit for about 8 hours and went to start it again and it fired right up. I let it run for about 1 minute and shut it down. This morning I was going to go for a cruise and went to start it and it fired right up. I let it warm up for about 2 minutes and it just died on it's own. I went to start it and it would just turn over and over like no spark. My coil is about 4 years old and is a Jegs hipo. My ign. is the Mopar hipo with a orange box. Any idea guy's what is going on. When it does fire up, it's starts immeadately, and runs great. I don't know if I have a ground problem or what.

(1) you came to the right place (2) (3)ECU,coil,dist pickup(in that order), got another ECU you can sub in & do make sure that the current one is grounded good(It's cheap/easy to do)

Pick-up coil should have approx 270 ohms across the terminals(disconected from harness). Ignition box needs approx 12 volts on lightblue/yellow wire. I don't think its a wiring issue if it's temp related. Box or pick-up coil. Check the pick-up coil when it's quit (most likely will be open). If its good I'd bet it's the box. I've seen them both fail with temp change. Could also be the ignition coil but I would bet against it.

Okay, It seems I have power at my coil and at the ballast resistor and Voltage regulator. When I take off my coil wire at distributor and turn it over, no fire. I am thinking it must be my orange box, it seems the fire is not going past it. I don't have anything power on this vehicle so it can't be much. Thanks

at that point in time ground the coil negative primary terminal to ground repeadly like Morse code & see if that will make the coil wire spark(key on) & it held ~1/4" from ground). If it will spark this checks everything ex the ECU/dist pickup(and their associated wiring) with the possible exception of the ign sw ign2(crank) circuit
