'69 Dodge Charger 727 - Throttle Lever & Shaft

'69 Dodge Charger 727 - Throttle Lever & Shaft - 06/29/08 12:24 AM

I am ready to adjust the throttle linkages on my '69 Charger 440 with the 727 Torqueflite using the procedures from the 1969 Service Manual. I located the procedure on page 21-53 and I have run into an issue with the very first step.

Step 3 - Hold the transmission lever (part # 11) firmly forward against its stop.

Here is where I have the problem.

The lever has spring tension when I move it towards the back of the car however when I push it forward it goes as far as it can and rests against the body of the transmission. I don't feel a "stop" as the service manual suggests.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Maybe this photo will help.

The shorter of the two levers moves all the way forward.

Is this normal?

When it won't move any further forward that's the stop they mean.

When you say the lever "rests against the body of the transmission" where does it make contact? Near the pointed end of the yellow arrow shown?

If the lever swings far enough forward to contact the case in that area, the shaft the lever is attached to could have a broken weld inside the trans. The shaft is welded to a cam and the weld often breaks.

Another possibility is that the tang on the cam is not making contact with the stop screw on the valve body; in either case the pan will have to be removed for inspection.

If it wern't for the plug in the way, yes it would hit the casing.

I'm guessing the cam is missing my stop screw or my stop screw is missing.

Thank you.
