What to replace-A833 rebuild

What to replace-A833 rebuild - 07/22/09 02:18 AM

I'm in the process of rebuilding my A833 4-speed. I took it apart because it was leaking oil and also made a "crunch" when shifting into or out of 3rd gear when the fluid was warm.

I am planning on ordering a proper rebuild kit from Brewer's Performance. In addition, I know I need at least the syncro stop rings but I wanted to know everyone's opinion on the wear that I found when I took it apart. If it matters this is a 1967 A-body transmission (23spline in/large output yoke).

1) This is the input shaft. It looks like a small section of the casting in front of where the bearing retaining snap ring sits is missing. The snap ring was still holding tight though. I'm thinking of letting this one slide as the rest of the input shaft looks fine.

2) This is one of the shift forks. there's some wear to make somewhat of a groove in the brass fork. I don't know if this is actually an issue or not, but the contact surface is not completely flat anymore.

3) This is the reverse idler and reverse transfer gear It looks like the engaging end is pretty worn. The gear worked and engaged alright, it had popped out on me a time or two. does this look bad?

4) This is the 3-4 syncro surface. The ring that slides over this moves easily and freely. Would this cause the gear crunch? Do I need to replace this entire syncro?

5) This is the countershaft. Are these blemishes a problem? Countershafts are inexpensive so I really don't mind replacing this.

Thanks for any help/advice!

If you could take some slightly more in focus pics of the input shaft and lighten it up, that would help- it's hard to make out the details.

I would replace the counterhaft, as it appears there's a good size pit/flaw from what I can see in the pic.

Looking at the synchro assembly (1-2 or 3-4?), I see some very uneven wear and some grooes cut into the long teeth edge- not good. I would replace that synchro assembly. I bought new 1-2 and 3-4 synchro assemblies from Liberty Gear in MI for my first A-833 rebuild, and they were about $70-$80 a piece, IIRC.

I'll get a better pic of the input shaft tomorrow when i get the bearing off.

Its the 3-4 syncro assembly in the picture. It had been making a crunch noise when shifting into or out of 3rd.

Put a new countershaft in.

The input should be fine. Sure its not machined away?

Don't worry about the pointed reverse gear teeth.

I'd at least knock the burrs off that syncro hub.

Definately install a new bearing/roller kit and brass stop rings.

What do the pointed teeth of the sliders and speed gears look like?

This is another picture of the input shaft:

I think it will be alright though. It looks more like a broken piece/defect than something that was supposed to be there.

This is 3rd gear. It looks decent to me and just like the rest of the gears. the inside of the shift slider also looked pretty good.

These are the syncro keys for the 3-4 syncro. they all have wear but the one on the right looks worn out. I will definitely replace that one.

These are the syncro keys for the 1-2 syncro. This one worked fine with no noise, and the surfaces of the syncro gears look good on this one. I think I will leave these keys.

Thanks for the help guys. please let me know if there are any other good sources for the parts i need other than Brewer's.

That input shaft is supposed to look like that.

Countershaft will need replaced. Also check the ID of the cluster for wear since the shaft is bad. Everything else looks to be useable except a couple of the syncro keys. When you replace the syncro rings you need to make sure they fit well.
