Time for ALUMINUM heads! But which ones?!? HELP!!! - 07/10/09 10:40 PM

Hey all,
I am ready to upgrade my 1970 Challenger to aluminum heads.
With all of the after-market heads out there now I’m running in circles with what to go with.
So I am looking toward the Mopowed knowledge of you all on the Moparts web board for the correct parts the first time.

I also want to run a roller camshaft and roller valve train. So I am also asking for input on what to run there also.

The current set-up is as follows –

Motor –
- 1969 HP 440 block w/stock steel crank
- 452 heads (gasket matched) with stock valve train
- M1 intake
- Hooker Headers (3 ½ collectors)
- Main stud girdle & windage tray
- Demon 880 carburetor
- Holley Volu-Max fuel pump

Car –
- 1970 Challenger
- Dana 60 w/4:10 gear
- Mini tubbed
- Stock suspension with 90/10 front - slightly too long in the rear
- 29x12.5x15 Hoosier quick time pros – 3.5’s up front
- Box tube sub frame connectors
- 6 cylinder torsion bars

The car was on a RW Dyno and made 398hp and 486lbs with a 750 Holley
The best pass on the street tires and full exhaust was 11.89 @ 120 with a 1.61 short time.

I believe that covers everything, any and all help and opinion would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, and remember . . . Do it in a MOPAR!!!

I think the Edelbrock 84 cc heads and some mild porting would be just what you need.

Those are good, but if you want an extra $500 to put towards your roller valve train then consider the 440Source units. I'm running them (1st production run) and while they needed a bit of 'tweeking' I'm very happy with them for the money I spent ($899 loaded). I also used a roller setup and went with the Comp Cams retro hydraulic roller.

What cam are you running with the 11.89 at 120
combo? The 120 is a good speed to maybe hit
the mid to high 10's.

You say opinion, so this is what I think. No need
for a roller set up unless you want to spend the money.
A solid cam will make very good power at
a better cost than a roller. I also think the
440source CNC'd Stealth heads will do the trick
with simple Iron ductil adjustable rockers.

I had a combo close to you. Demon 825 Race carb,
M-1 intake, 452 iron (full ported) heads, Hooker
super comp headers. I had the Ultradyn .613 solid
cam. In a 4000 lb. car it ran 11.16 on Hoosier
QTP's. All in a little 440.

Agree the 84cc Edlebrocks or stealth equivalents would work great. With either one, a good shop should at least "prep" the heads meaning check valve to guide clearance, do a good valve job and clean up the ports and bowls. Muscle Motors, Hughes and others offer this service. CNC porting would be better but not needed in your application.

I'm running prepped and pocket ported Edelbrocks with an agressive mechanical flat tappet cam on a 496 and love the combo. I run diesel oil plus STP to deal with the zinc issue with no problems so far. If you go roller, make sure you work with somebody who knows how to set it up in a 440. Cam end play needs to be set with a thrust button and special care may be needed to set up oiling correctly.

Cleaned up and checked 440 source heads is all you need. I would strongly advise spending a few bucks for EDM lifters if you're going with a solid cam.

Any out of te box head will need checked.I spent like 500 on the upgrades for my Stealths that I would have done to the Eddys also. Its pretty much a matter of choice.Rocky

Only reason I didn't mention the Stealth heads is that I've never seen a set or used them, and usually there is a big -discussion about them. But the Stealth heads would work great too.

Re: Time for ALUMINUM heads! But which ones?!? HELP!! - 07/12/09 03:21 AM

I bought a set of 440source stealth heads for mine on their first production run. I just bolted them on for the first time this week and have not run them yet. I know, I know, took me forever to get around to this project. If I had to do it over again I would run stock heads and try a centrifugal supercharger with a mild hydraulic cam, but that's ansering a question you didn't ask, lol.

One thing I like about the stealths is after I painted the motor, at a casual glance they look like stock heads. Get up close and you can tell they're not stock because the casting lines and machined surfaces are too crisp.

Go with Edelbrock victors or Indy SRs, ether one of these heads with also work better with that Roller cam you want to use. Good heads and a good camshaft is where the horse power is at.
