Removing front wheel cylinders on 1967 Coronet - 06/26/08 04:19 PM

Hey Guys!

What is the procedure for removing the front wheel cylinders on a '67 B-Body? It appears that the bolts holding the wheel cylinder on are not accessible without removing the backing plate from the suspension.

I can get at one of the bolts, but the one right beside the brake line doesnt appear to be accessible.

Is there a trick to this that Im not seeing? I have the FSM but it doesnt show anything.

Thanks guys!

I don't have a '67 in front of me to look at, but that doesn't sound right (to have to remove the backing plate).

The "inaccessible" bolt by the brake line - are you married to the idea of removing it with a socket, and haven't tried a box-end wrench on it? (Probably unlikely, but I thought I'd ask anyway.) Also, if it's just a matter of having enough clearance to back the bolt ALL the way out, just remove the other bolt first, and let the WC pull away from the backing plate as you turn the remaining bolt, effectively leaving the bolt head where it is.

If none of this applies, then try removing the brake line. You were going to have to separate it from the WC anyway, so all this adds to the project is the need to remove the other end of the rubber line (so you can spin it out of the WC).

I'll try this again, I pulled the front end off my 66' and it appears to be original as far as I can tell anyway.

The one WC bolt is only accesible with a 1/2" open end wrench, after the hose is removed. I tried several other tools to get at them but there's just not enough room to do it. The hoses came off with minimum effort.

I pulled the whole spindle/drum off as a unit in favor of discs after the front is rebuilt, and I have them lying on the ground wiht a cut chunk of hose still theaded into the WC and it's not even possible to get at the mount bolt on the hose side with the hose in place, and there's no room for a socket between the knuckle and the backing plate regardless, it's not even an option.

You definitely do not ahve to R&R the backing plate to get at the (2)wheel cyl bolts on the backside. you might try a 3/8"(IIRC) offset box end wrench.

never did a Coronet, but the '67 Charger I had was no harder than my '68 or '69

Hey Guys!

OK, thanks a bunch... I just have to remember not to give up so easily! I will remove the hose... its not like this one is different from all the other ones that you guys have worked on! I swear my '69 Bee was easy as pie though.
