New lifter install question

New lifter install question - 07/08/09 04:56 AM

After doing it myself several different ways, whats the common way to install new lifters.

Soaked in oil overnight first?

Submersed into oil and bleed/pumped up?

Skim coat of oil on the outside and drop in?

Oil the outside and top bore area but not pumped full?

Just curious on the consensus.

i would use some kind of cam break in lube on the cam and lifters bottom...

i would not soak the lifters...you really dont want them pumped up...can cause bend pushrods and valves...

Yep... wipe the bores with motor oil, and coat the cam lobe and lifter BOTTOM with moly no reason to soak Double, then triple check to make sure the lifters are rotating in the bores

Yep, each lifter should easily fall into place in their bore, and you should be able to spin it by hand a few times.

During mockup before final assembly (w cam in), clean lifter OD and lifter bores w brake clean then lightly lube lifter OD/bores with WD40, install lifters & lift each one off of the cam lobe w your finger & let go & each one should fall back onto it's lobe with a resounding "thunk". If so you have enough clearance for it(as said) to rotate(critical) & if not hone them. Lifter prep: take apart/clean each lifter w clean solvent, blow dry them/reassemble w light coat of eng oil on the inside parts & on final assembly lightly lube lifter OD(ex for the bottom) and the lifter bores w engine oil, install them, raise it off the lobe THEN apply cam breakin lube on the bottom face(Lobes already lubed w breakin paste) that way the cam lube doesn't get on the lifter sides & interfere w the lifters ability to rotate(critical on breakin). When you preoil w the drill it will pump them up to where they need to be
