Highbeam headlight problem - 07/06/09 10:34 PM
When my headlights are on and I hit my highbeam switch the low beam go out and the highbeams don't come on. Any idea what the problem is? This is a 70 B-body with a new foot highbeam switch. Thanks, Todd

Hi bean headlights good? Don't know why the low beams go out?
When my hi beam switch acts up, both my headlights go out. Got to be firm with it and I remember replacing it years ago too.

Either wiring, grounds, sealed beams, or dimmer switch, easy to troubleshoot
Pull out the dimmer, you have three wires.
One is hot with headlight switch on.
Dimmer routes power to either hi or low circuit, so you should be able to "jumper" from the hot to either side and see what happens. You get lights, it's the switch, you don't , it's.....
wiring, grounds, or sealed beams
So go up front, pull the lamps, wiggle the connectors, and get your ohmeter, check the hi--beams for continuity with your meter. Clean and retighten the wiring harness grounds.
Even with a nagging girlfriend, a sixpack, and the dog barking, this should not take you an hour to fix

I had it the other way around. Where only the high beams would work. Turned out to be loose wiring, took 3 minutes to fix.

Thanks for the help I found the problem. When the bodyshop put the doors back on they pinched one of the wires going to the dimmer switch with a hinge bolt. Thanks
