Speedometer Problem 2003 Caravan

Speed needle pegged....on start-up, speed needle went all the way around to peg and stayed. will not return to zero... I removed neg. battery terminal, it dropped back to infront of odometer. Reconnected battery ,it went forward to peg...?????? Thanks for any help!
btw, all the other gauges,including odometer are working fine.
