Turn Signal/Flasher question

Turn Signal/Flasher question - 06/30/09 05:52 PM

The only stupid question is the one not asked, right?
I have a ’65 Coronet 440 the right turn signal and brake light stopped working. Normal tail light is ok. I am thinking the flasher went bad. Any other thoughts?

My questions are –

1 – Is it in the wiring harness or on the back of the dash/gauge cluster?
2 – How many is there, 1 or 2?
3 – Anybody have a source before I start searching around?

Thanks, for any help.

Have you checked the bulb. Tail light and brake light are seperate fitiments in the bulb. If you have then the turn signal switch is probably bad not the flasher.

if you still have left turn signal probably you got bulb damaged since both sides uses same flasher. The other flasher is to hazzards.

Brakes and turn signals uses same filament AND wire

otherwise, if not damaged bulb, then some wire problem OR turning switch.

Yup, I checked the bulb it looked fine but I replaced it anyway, no change.

The left turn signal still works, would that happen with a bad TS switch? Thanks for the reply.

4 ways were dealer option in 65.Only have seen 1 with them in 40 years.Check the bulb.If thats not it it might be the T/S switch. That and make sure the lever isnt loose.ZThey just have a screw to hold them on in 65.Mine was loose and I lost my turn.Tightened it and it was good.

Oh yes is true, forgott that! well whatever, IF EQUIPPED then the other flasher would it be to hazzards

We don't have to think it could be the TS switch, remember you have wires AND socket in the middle of equation.

Try to feed the bulb directly to tail light plug to check for socket or wire to socket... then you can try to feed on kick panel area plug and down the column directly on TS harness.

Thanks Rocky. The car doesn't have 4 ways. Are you saying then it won't have a flasher? If so that would explain why I can't find it.

Would one turn signal still work if the switch was bad? And I will check the lever for sure.

Yes you have one flasher. Yes the switch could be bad and still have one side working. Have someone watch the brake lights while you move the turn signal lever with your foot on the brakes to see if the left light comes on. To find the flasher turn on the right side signal and listen for the click under the dash.

Pull the steering col connector apart(the one for the ts/brakes/flashers & jump 12V to the wire for the large filament in the rr dual filament bulb & if good pull the steering wheel & checkout the TS switch assy. If not good check the connector in the dr kick panel & if no "open" check the connector in the front part of the trunk for an "open", if good recheck the RR dual filament bulbs' socket

65 were nad for the sockets not grounding in the housing also. That and the brass terminals in the socket that touch the bulb contacts get deep in the hole and the springs get weak. There is a flasher as said and if one side flashes its good.Get a test light and see if the one has power to it.The columns on these are simple.Only has i believe 6 wires.Does the TS stem move any? They will come losse.I know had mine for 40 years.Rocky

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. I checked the TS lever and it is tight. Here is some more info I should have mentioned earlier...the same side front blinker doesn't work and the blinker indicator light in the dash does not blink either. It just stays solid green. Any more ideas? I am leaning toward the turn signal switch going bad. Should the ts click off after returning to center?

Not sure about those earlier cars, but if the dash indicator light stays on solid green with the turn signal switch in that position, that seems to me that the switch is good. The problem may lie further somewhere downstream of the switch: maybe in the driver side kick panel connector, or along the frame rail wiring. Get a test light and check in the kick panel area first to see if there's power to the wire for the affected light. If so, check the wire in the trunk to see if there's power to the affected light. If not, the fault lies somewhere in between.

A test light (even one you make yourself) is a REAL handy item...

IF the ts doesn't return to center position with the wheel returned to center (from at least one turn off), that could be a turn signal cam cancel tab broken off. New turn signal switch time.

Good luck.

Ok I looked in my 65 manual the color is dark green for left and brown for right rear rf is tan lf is light green.Thats at the connector under the column. You should have power to all when the switch is either L or R.Two will have power left two power when on right. If not the switch is bad.Check power on both sides of the connector.Rocky
