very black oil

very black oil - 06/27/09 08:32 PM

I finally got the six pack running great so decided to change oil though I had only 140 miles on it. Found the oil to be jet black. Would this be from the center carb putting out to much gas? Would there be any other thing that would cause that? I use Valvoline VR-1 20W50

If it was caused by a rich carb .. the oil would smell like gas. You might have some SEVERE blow-by issues caused by that rich-carb ... that wiped out the rings.

Didn't you also have an EXTENDED period of difficulty getting the engine to run right???? You posted the issues recently. Is this latest oil change AFTER those issues were resolved or before?

What kind of cam lube did you use? If it was the black moly then that's part of the ugly oil.

it was after the issue with the carbs and as for the rings being wipped out I would think I would be smoking out the tail which I am not.

I did the break in last summer and went with new oil this spring. I fought a problem with the car running way to rich and after about 100 miles finally got that corrected and then decided to change oil just incase and that is when I found the oil to be very black. As I said I get no smoking out the back, car starts and runs great and oil seems to be fine now with about fifty miles on it and will keep a close eye on it. I was just wondering if there was anything other than gas that may have caused the black. I checked the oil with fresh and it seems about the same thickness so I don't think it is very diluted. Would it take much gas to turn the oil black?

This happened on my six pack as well, which also needed a lot of tuning when first started up. Changed oil, monitored since, all good. Drive it and relax, you can't take it apart on just dirty oil to go on...wait until you really break something!
