think i need an oil cooler? - 06/25/09 09:06 PM
hi, been driving my 493ci Imperial around in the hot weather, then watching the light flicker and the oil pressure dropping to ~15# at idle after a long freeway run. the car has the original (5qt?) c-body pan, HP pump, 20w50 oil. i was thinking a cooler would help with the temp of course and add some capacity to the sump.
i've been looking at the Canton spin on adapters, has anoybody done this on a bb and is it better to just relocate the filter too, maybe add a 2nd filter, then what size cooler would you recommend, then would you consider a hi-volume pump, etc etc.
thanks for your help

'71 imperial
the oil light is off an 18# sender. if i put it in neutral it'll maybe flicker, blip the throttle it goes out, depends on how hot it must be. i've shot the pan with an IR thermometer and seen maybe 240F.
water temps are < 190

I had a 71 2 door for awhile. I am still lokking for a 69.
I would not worry about it. What kind of psi at say 3500? ...
I would try and find a higher-capacity pan.

psi at speed is good.
i guess i could get one of those adjustable screws for the pump and crank up the pressure a little huh.
i couldn't find a pan that would fit to my satisfaction... got help on cbodydrydock.com and then went with my stock pan, with "custom" baffles ;-)
'69s are tight. look up "imperial donut" on youtube heh

At 240F I would want to cool the oil and on the Q I would consider the next grade of thicker oil(for the summer) and possibly a hv pump. #15 @idle is OK(but getting close to the edge) as long as it jump up immediately when you rev it

If you do decide you want an oil cooler, I would just buy an oil filter relocation kit and add in a cooler in-line when you pipe in the filter mount.
