Beware of SCAT balance jobs - 06/24/08 05:03 AM
Know two people that recently bought balanced scat stroker kits. Needless to say the money paid for the balance job was an absolute waste. One had pistons that varied a great deal, and scat used the weight on the box to set up bob weight.
Needless to say, both buyers are paying AGAIN for the balance to be done correctly by a local shop.
Scat has ignored one of the buyers and won't return phone calls or e-mails.

i think that paying for a prebalanced stroker kit is a waste of money. I paid for one and it was 100 grams off. next time the machine shop will do it.

Did they buy them directly from them or another source? Some places sell them and sell the extra balance from a cheaper source than scat, thus saving cash and pocketing the extra.

One guy I know bought the balanced kit directly from Scat and all his pistons were way off. I bought my balanced kit through my local machine shop and had them go over everything. The pistons were off a couple of grams here and there and the rods needed some adjustment also. Crank was way off; 6 grams on one side and 15 grams on the other side.
Bearing clearances were checked and found to be right on the money.
A small flaw was found in a rod journal and was sent back to Scat for replacement three weeks ago. Still waiting.

My machinist refuses to use Scat products. I spoke w/ him today about a Stroker we are building and he said we have to wait for Eagle to get crankshafts back in stock since he won't touch the Scat. "Too many problems and s**t parts" is how he put it.

Scat has a very good reputation that is why I went with their kit. Just don't pay for the balancing because they don't do it right. Get a local shop to balance it.
