what size stall for my 440? - 06/12/09 09:14 PM

What size stall would be good for my 440? Its in a 74 challenger. 906 heads, .509 purple shaft, 750 holley. It's not for the track, just driving on the weekends and around town. Thanks

Nice sized cam for just a weekend driver.
2200-2400 is all it should need.
Any more stall and you just waste fuel.

I would use alot more then 2500 with the MP .509 cam. What gears are you running ? I use a 9.5 Dynamic that works great for me. Drives like a regular converter but flashes about 4200 at the track. Ron

Just 355s right now. So do I need something in the 3000 range?

Do you want to be able to nail the throttle and bust tires loose but good? I'd stick the ptc 9.5 in there.

With that combo I would say go with 3000 RPM stall.

3000 stall and install the cam at 102 to 104

mopar 509 is about 250 duration at .050 i believe. needs a good 4000. 383man has some good advice. I have a 9.5 dynamic in my 3500 lb satellite. no problems on the street, even with 3.23 gears. been in there for years and gets driven alot.

umm. I'm running a 3800lb 69 B-body with a 496 stroker, beefed up 727 rev. manual valve body with external cooler, 3:23's, M/T drag radials that hook real nice and running high 11's...

This combo also includes a very cheapo Mopar Performance "Economy Hi-stall" 2200rpm (factory 340 hi-stall?) converter bought for $240 new 3 years ago and performs great.

I thought I said 2200-2400? I guess Hoof
is the only one to understand.
Wasn't this just a street car. I would of picked
a smaller cam, but the 509 will work.
On the street it doesn't matter what stall you have
(with in reason) or what the gears are because it never hooks.

Yes the bigger stall is better at the track, but it
sucks for freeway cruisen when matched up with
low gears.

hoof has a 496, the original poster has a 440. i do agree with you somewhat in that with typical hard street tires it might not hook up anyway no matter what convertor. But he might get the urge to go racing someday and that 509 will be a dog out of the hole with a 2400 stall. I agree that if it is just a street cruiser he ought to just put a smaller cam in it, about 230 at .050 or thereabouts, along with your recommended 2400 convertor . As far as Roofs cheapo MP convertor, i've got one behind a mild 400 and like it but i might be a bit leery of running one with a high output motor for fear it might not last long.

I am running the exact same setup you have in a 69 gtx with 430 gears and I am using a 10" 3500 TCI converter,go ahead and spend the money on a good converter you won't be sorry!

for a street car, I agree...

More would be ideal, but a 440 is pretty forgiving with anything 3K or more.

Re: what size stall for my 440? - 06/14/09 05:11 AM

Ran the .509 for years....and I can tell you that there is NO way a 2400 rpm convertor is a choice at all!!
3000 - 3400 is what you need. And if you're worried about not being able to "cruise" you're worrying too much!!!
My Challenger was a tad "loose" under 40 MPH with a 3800 B&M Holeshot, but on the highway it was no problem. No difference in mileage to speak of.
Don't waste the time with a low stall convertor...get one that will make use of the cam.
That .509 is a great cam.

M/T Radial Drags 275/60/15's and the cam is a Voodoo Hydr. 533/552" 284 deg. Initially run with a 440-performer RPM, but Too Much Torque(did I say that?) She now happilly wears a TM-7 and still has awesome street manners and ran an 11.98@115 with my fat butt in the car. Lost some wieght and gonna add some juice to her this year.

The fast rate of lift is great for a Hydralic cam and the mild 284 duration is like a mopar 484" cam.

Great Cam, coulda/shoulda? gone bigger.

And Hey, To the other Members: Stop calling me Hoof. It's "Hoof Hearted", like the Race Horse, and it's pronounced with a slight lisp, inquisative tone and a wrinkled smirk on one's face.
