Hy-per Lube Zinc Additive- any good? - 06/11/09 12:38 AM

Does anyone know of a zinc additive called "Hy-per Lube Zinc Replacement Additive" (www.hyperlube.com)? Is it any good? For $16/bottle, it'd better be. I can't find any references about it here on the board- I'm surprised noone's asked about it before....

Thanks!

Uhmm.... ok. If noone's heard anything good about it, can someone at least tell me if they've heard anything BAD about it?

Lunati has break in lube #301 for a lot less money.

There is cheaper. Even Year One has a cheaper answer that seems to work well...ZDDP plus. They sell it for $10.00 prior to the Moparts discount.

I have used the Zddp stuff for a while now and I actually do think it seems to make the engine slightly quieter...probably just my imagination.

ZDDP seems to be the general consensus around here for the best additive. I only picked up this stuff as I found it over at the local O'Reilly's. Naturally they didn't have the ZDDP Plus stuff....

I was going to try the Hy-per additive on another pre-90s car I have- I just wanted to see if the stuff was at least ok to use, or if it was so bad I should take it back for a refund. But I'll probably try to some of that ZDDP Plus for the Charger. I think it's too late to get in on the board members special but I found someone on Ebay selling 5/$45....

Rather than adding ZDDP, I think you're better off using an engine oil that has enough ZDDP already in it. Excessive amounts of any additive can lead to engine deposits. The Corvair Flat Tappet Engine Oil article recommends Heavy Duty Engine Oils (HDEOs) with a CI-4/SL ratings (rather than CJ-4/SM) ratings and these are commonly available.

I've written an Engine Oil article for the ACCCC website and I'm recommending 0W-30 HDEOs for our club member cars requiring 30-weight oil.
