Handling/brake upgade

Handling/brake upgade - 12/15/05 08:40 PM

Hi I recently purchsed a 2 door 67 Chrysler New Yorker and I was interested in upgrading the brakes to discs and improving the handling of the car. I found alot of tech articles on swapping discs brakes n suspension pieces for other model cars and was wondering if anyone can supply me with any info on my car. Thanks-Bill

Re: Handling/brake upgade - 12/15/05 08:51 PM

Not sure about the brakes, but I'd think the disc setups from -72-74 will bolt up. AS far as handling, invest in a rear sway bar, perhaps some beeffier rear springs, and then get some big wheels and low profile tires for it. The wheels/tires, coupled with urethane bushings thruout will make it handle like it on rails..at least as well as you can get..lol.

Re: Handling/brake upgade - 12/15/05 09:24 PM

Get the `70 to `73 single piston brakes and be sure to use the 11.75 rotors on that heavy car. You will need the bendix disk brake booster too to make it work right. Get a matched set of sway bars and you can upgrade the torsion bars to the 1.06" 1974 chrysler units that came on wagons and some other HD applications. Do not use urethane bushings except on the sway bars unless you want to ruin the quiet smoothe ride that we buy these big cars for.

Very good advice for a C body. Any Chrysler C body disk brakes will bolt right up from 70-73 Make sure you get the 70-73 spindles, caliper brackets, bracket bolts and dust shields, everything else is available from any parts store. I would add - get the HD replacement rear leaf springs from ESPO. The 1.06" torsion bars can be hard to find, but Wildcat auto wreckers has enough donor cars to at least find a set of 1.02"s If you don't get the combination valve from the donor car, www.mpbrakes.com has good stuff.

Re: Handling/brake upgade - 12/16/05 12:26 AM

Actually, if you want to use the better 11.75 rotor, you HAVE to use the '73 spindle ONLY. '72-earlier used a smaller spindle, and '74-up, there were changes made to the spindle ( I don't remember exactly what off hand ) I think in how the tie rod mounts.

Re: Handling/brake upgade - 12/16/05 12:39 AM

I have a complete 11.75" setup from a `70 polara on my monaco. The only difference between the `70-`72 setup and the `73 is the spindle and inner wheel bearing. It`s a really easy swap and you even use the stock drum brake hose.

The `74 and newer has the ball joint in the lower control arm and is a totally different animal.

Chrysler introduced a new C body for the 1974 model year. In that year all C bodies, Fury, Monaco, Chrysler and Imperial, shared the came torsion bars. They were 47" bars, same as the 1965-73 Chryslers.

The Plymouth Fury used 44" bars from 1965 through 1973. The 1974 Fury and 1975-77 Gran Fury used 47" bars.

Canadian market Dodge Polara/Monaco models used 44" bars from 1965 while American market Dodges used 47". All Polara and Monaco models used 44" bars in 1972-73 and switched to 47" for 1974.

The Imperial adopted the C body when it switched to unibody construction for 1967. It was basically the New Yorker body with a 3" longer front stub (and torsion bars). The 1974 Imperial used the same front stub as the other C bodies and thus switched to 47" bars. The C body Imperial bars do not interchange with the bars from the earlier D body (1957-66).

The difference in length between the 122" wheelbase Plymouth and Dodge C bodies in 1974 and the 124" wheelbase Chrysler and Imperial C bodies was in the back seat floor.

Wow-Thanks for all the info, I'm new to the Mopar scene but I have fallen in love with these cars. All of your info has given me a great starting point. Once I set up the beast to be able to stop I will upgrade the exhaust and cam/carb. I have a performer intake manifold to slap on also. Thanks again-Bill

The C-barge stuff won't work on the A-body spindle. You can get the same diameter with the mid-late 70's B-body "cop car" rotors, they're just 1" thick rather than 1.25" thick. The C stuff is HEAVY!!

Maybe I should rephrase that, '73 also brought about the 'one piece' unicast rotor. The earlier pressed together rotors are spendy (if you can find 'em). When I did my '71 Chrysler about 10yrs ago, ONE new two piece rotor was more expensive then TWO of the '73 unicast rotor.

As mentioned above, its been 10yrs since I messed with C-body stuff, so the memories are a bit fuzzy.

Replacement rotors for the `70 to `72 stuff are one piece now same as the `73.
