HELP...Intake gasket question...what is wrong here? - 06/05/09 08:23 PM

Putting the intake back in and noticed the center heat cross-over "upside down U" shaped holes are not covered by the new FelPro gaskets. Is this right?

What's the purpose of that open area...by the way, imo the FelPro look like *&^*(. And when you use the stupid plastic cup rings it holds the intake up so it doesn't set on the heads???

It's for cooling the heat cross over area on the head.

I use the MR Gasket paper style gaskets on my 340. I don`t like the blue felpro ones.

I grease my intake gaskets and reuse them.

Those plastic cup thingies are the wrong dia & wont work, I super glue(or something similar) to hold the side gaskets in place & I always use some gasket cement on both sides of the port openings(SPARINGLY) whether it calls for it or not . As said you want those horseshoe openings left open if you have a functioning heat riser(I dont like it functioning) , too much heat & affects the volatility of todays fuels. If not functioning you could cover it if you so desire(they do look ugly)

How do you cover the upsidedown crossover holes? Do you need special gaskets?

The horseshoe shaped passages are air damns to break up the heat collection from the 2 inner exhaust valves and the heat cross over all being united with out some sort of break up between them would create a very hot spot in the center of the heads. They actually do not go into anything and have no gasket coverage they remain wide open.

I feel that the paper type gaskets seal better. You should be fine.
