What trans fluid in 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L?

What trans fluid in 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L? - 06/02/09 02:20 AM

There seems to be some confusion as the correct type of transmission fluid. I went to Checker Auto and between their computer and a former Jeep owner working the counter there is a contradiction between ATF+3, ATF+4 and Dexron or Mercron. Does anyone know beyond a reasonable doubt?

I had a 99 Cherokee with a 4.0L/auto and my brother has a 01 Cherokee with a 4.0L/auto and we both have only used ATF+4 when servicing the transmissions in them.

In 2000 when your Grand Cherokee was new the +4 fluid hadn't come out yet. The original fill is +3. Now (at Chrysler) there is no more +3, you use +4 for everything. So the answer is you can use either. I think the +4 is a little more $$$. Hope this helps.

I am assuming it's a Cherokee Sport??

The trans in that truck (AW) is not really particular about fluid. Dexron is the recommended fluid for that unit, but you could easily substitute any other fluid and have no issues. In fact that transmission is so tough, you could probably put anything in it and it would shift just fine...

If its the Aisin AW4, pull out the dipstick and look. It will say to use Dexron right on the dipstick. Use what the manufacturer of the transmission suggests as written on the dipstick, not the parts counter guy or the guy who's friend used to work at a dealership.

Discussion:
ATF+4® - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic
transmissions. ATF+4® is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler
Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE NOTED ABOVE.

NOTE: ATF+4® must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with
ATF+4®. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FLUID.

NOTE: ATF+4® is backward compatible with ATF+3 , ATF+2, and ATF+. Additionally,
ATF+4 can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+.

NOTE: If ATF+4® is used to service models originally filled with ATF+3 , ATF+2, and
ATF+ the fluid maintenance schedules listed for that model does not change.
The service interval currently in effect for a given model should continue to
be followed. Refer to the Service or Owners manual for maintenance
schedule directions.

In general terms, If ATF+, ATF+2 or ATF+3 was the recommended fluid, it is now
recommended to use ATF+4.

BENEFITS

Better anti-wear properties
Improved rust/corrosion prevention
Controls oxidation
Eliminates deposits
Controls friction
Retains anti-foaming properties
Superior properties for low temperature operation
FLUID COLOR

Mopar ATF+4® has exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4® is not
permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4® also
has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4® fluid, color and odor are no
longer indicators of fluid condition and do not necessarily support a fluid change.
