Is flushing or draining trans. in an 01 jeep better? - 06/20/08 12:46 PM

Dealer "suggests" that i need to have my trans flushed for 150 bucks. I had it drained and filter replaced 2 years ago at another place other than dealer. Just wondering which is better, i seem to have heard something about flushing ruins something... maybe i am wrong... thanks.

I always flush my own by taking the cooler line off and putting a clear hose on it then running it into a bucket. Idle it in neutral and keep adding fluid as it's draining until the fluid is clear.

flushing is the cheap and easy way out for the dealer , but what it does do is completely change the fluid including whats in the convertor , that bad part is they are probably not dropping the pan and changing the filter , thats usually extra .

It isn't that flushing ruins anything.
It is that people with 100k miles of gunk build up that have never changed the fluid try to flush their transmissions and then the gunk that settled suddenly gets spread out through the whole transmission.
It then proceeds to eat itself. So people blame the flush rather than poor maintence.

it's not the flush or the gunk , its putting fresh fluid in after never having had replaced it that kills the trans .

Per a Mopar tech, the problem with the flush is neither lack of maintenance, nor the new fluid, but rather no (or incorrect) additives used.

I need to do both our Explorers, I think I'll try the clear hose idea! I just need to find out what (if any) additives I might need! Thanks for the tip!
