Urathane Enamel?

Urathane Enamel? - 05/10/09 09:29 PM

I know how it says to mix it but it isn't going as far as I thought it would. Can you mix it any other way than the 4-1-1 ? This is the first time I have used this so any info will help. TIA Ronnie in Okla.

If it's 4-1-1 you can go up or down as long as you keep the ratio the same. I would not deviate from the ratio on the can unless you know what your doing. You can play with the reducer if it's too thick I suppose...

4-1-1 = 6

Cut in half if would be....2-.5-.5 = 3

Doubling it would be....8-2-2 = 12

Make sense?

Keep the ratio of paint to catalyst (hardener) the same. You CAN play around with the reducer to a degree (you can easily half or double the reducer to suit your intended conditions)

Not sure what you mean by not "going as far", if you over reduce to make more sprayable mix then the coverage might suffer.

How much should it take to spray the trunk and inner fenders of a 70 RoadRunner? It took 2 guns and that seemed like a lot to me. So how much will it take to do the body without the doors, hood and trunk lid? I just don't want to run out of paint. Thanks Ronnie

Not enough info. Base clear or SS????

If SS I'll say buy the gallon, it will be a little more than you need but the pricing of paint offers a significant discount for the gallon (often is about the equivelent $ of buying three quarts) Thats for the whole car minus doors/hood/trunk lid....not sure why your not including those.

How many coats are you putting on. In my experience, especially with urethane, you spray on a medium wet coat, allow it to tack, and then spray on a top coat. If you are putting on more paint than that, you are either just wasting paint or getting slightly better depth to your finish. If you are shooting over old paint jobs, and adding primer on top, you need to be careful about putting too much paint on, period. In this case I would just put the two coats on. If you are using a siphon feed gun, keep in mind that more of your paint is going away in overspray just from the air pressure. Anyway, 2 full resevoirs should be plenty. the trunk can consume alot of paint if you are getting up under the backlight and up the inner quarters, behind the back seat area, etc.

how much paint youre laying on will also dictate the amout of product used.

I blew through a quart of single stage just doing the trunk compartment. I did however apply much more paint in every area of the compartment than the factory ever dreamed of putting in there.

FWIW, I was able to do the trunk, bottom of the trunk lid, the engine compartment and the bottom of the hood with less than one quart of Dupont Chroma One single stage urethane. I used 2 quarts of Dupont Chroma base for the rest of the car.

Last summer I painted a fender and header panel for my kids Jeep with less than a 1/2 pint of PPG base.

BTW, these are paint numbers not mixed amounts.

All I know is that if you plan on a gallon to jamb everything, you will end up short 1 quart. Murphy's Law you know, always figure for more. Every car is different, and different colors (and coverage) is also a factor. If you are getting good results, then just bite the bullet and buy more paint, I'm afraid it is just the way it usually goes. Just my , no need to quote the crap out of me today!
