What does a 1966 satellite gas cap look like - 05/04/09 07:59 PM
Is it stock car color or is it polished with the emblem?

Actually the '66 Satellite uses a body color cap with a simple bar handle. Belvedere II is the model with the emblem handle.

Wasnt a chrome cap optional for the Satellite? (Still no emblem - just a chrome version of the painted cap)

I have a NOS chrome cap in an original Mopar box back at home. Now it has me wondering. From what I remember, it looks like the stock painted cap, only chrome. Will post pictures and part number when I find it.
Either way, I like the look of the Belvedere cap better! The Satellites used the similar looking emblems on the roof - why wouldnt they use the cap to match?! The lower model Belevderes could have got the plain cap instead.

All 66 Satellites have body color fuel caps. The replacement caps from Mopar were chrome.

I can't explain the how's when's or why's, but they didn't leave the production line with chrome caps.

Chrome replacements were probably made so you didn't have to match the paint. I'm sure they had primer ones if one wanted to paint one.
