Need Speedometer Cable Help!

Need Speedometer Cable Help! - 05/04/09 05:57 PM

I am working on tracking down a new speedometer cable for my '74 Duster.

I pulled the old cable out and hit the autoparts store, they had 3 listed for my car. None of which were correct. I have a round thread cap on the transmission side (7/8" from what I can tell) and a round plastic cap on the gauge cluster side. The gauge cluster side (or dash side) clips on, there are no threads on the Dash side.

I am having a hard time tracking down a replacement for mine. Year One and Paddock Parts are backorderd for a month. I was hopeing to have the car on the road before then.

I am tempted to order one from (Part # CA3014)
http://www.bouchillonperformance.com/BPEcables.asp
But my original isn't any where near 80" long.

Given my recent track record with ordering parts I wanted to ask around and see what the best thing to do would be?

Is the cable housing bad or is it just the cable itself? If it's just the core you can get a cable core kit and replace it. If the cable and housing are bad try here for a part # and then go to the parts store. https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-bin/v...1&tid=60469

Call Mancini. I got the correct one for my T/A after running all over town and getting several wrong GENERIC ones.

The one I bought from Mancini worked perfectly w/ no issues on my wife's 70 Barracuda. I'm not concerned if it is 100% correct looking or not.

Napa has the correct length 1968+ A-body speedo cables for $20. See this post

Oops, I guess you were part of that post. Did you get your cable and was it the right length?

Thanks for the help, I ended up getting one from a local mom and pop shop and the one from Napa.

The cable I got from the mom and pop shop didn't fit but it was American made. It is close but it has the wrong transmission side on it, I am going to hold on to it because I may be able to use it else where, on another project.

The Napa cable was made in China with Japanese parts. It fit and appears to work. The hardes part was getting the old fire wall gromet off of the old on and on the new one. But I used some soap and a short (non-deep well) 1/2" drive 1/2" socket to open the grommet up. I from one socket on to another, stepping up the size of the sockets until I was able to slip the socket over the end of the cable. Then I just pushed it off of the socket and on to the speedometer cable.
