Which 4 BBL manifold & carb 4 project-UPDATED?

Which 4 BBL manifold & carb 4 project-UPDATED? - 05/03/09 07:42 PM

Guys, I need help fast. Well, not fast, but I wanted to paint one of these today. I am doing this 67 Power wagon, short wide with a 4 speed and real low granny gear. Its going to be a driver for around town when done. Its a little 318 LA. It runs well, but I am redoing the truck and changing the valve covers and want to ad a 4 BBL manifold and carb.

So, I have these two manifolds and need to buy a carb. I dont want to spend a ton, as this is a low buck project. But, its going into a cold climate and I want it to start and want it relaiable.

so that in mind, which one of these manifolds will work best and what carb should I buy. I dont mind buying new as I want it issue free.

thanks

Dave

Oh, I will also buy an electronic ignition and to make it real fast, I am painting the engine HEMI orange!!! I hear the paint speeds it up

The truck is also receiving new, fresh paint to match a 67 dart I recently painted.

The bottom manifold is non-EGR which is a plus... But if you plug the EGR they are about the same & the non-EGR manifold is probably a 71 3400 intake so someone might really like to have it for a FAST project....

Randy, first and this will sound dumb, but whats the EGR, and you mean the orange one is non EGR? I dont mind plugging the EGR and using the other and then using the orange one for some other project.

is it an exhaust gas some or rather?

and what carb with the EGR manifold should I use.

Re: Which 4 BBL manifold & carb 4 project-pics attached? - 05/03/09 08:10 PM

The orange one is non-EGR, EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation, viewed from the front to the right of the carb flange is two passages & two bolt holes, one passage is exhaust from the crossover passage, the other feeds both planes of the intake through holes below the carb...

Those manifolds are speadbore design & accept a Carter Thermoquad or a Rochester Quadrajet... Both carbs were used by Chrysler but the Thermoquad is much more common & when setup correctly is a great carb...

OK, so a thermoquad then? Can I buy it new, or do I need to find one that is rebuilt. And I assum that an aftermarket like edelbrock wont work and if so, what CFM? electric choke or on electric?

thanks again

Re: Which 4 BBL manifold & carb 4 project-pics attached? - 05/03/09 10:06 PM

I used a 70 340 intake on my 73 so I could use a Carter AFB. A 60's 273 Intake would match you 318 ports on your heads and use the more current Afb/avs or edelbrock Carbs. If you use a 340 or 360 Intake be sure to use the 340/360 Gaskets to seal on the 318 heads. Good Luck

Also you could buy the carb that I have sitting around doing nothing, a holley 650cfm double pumper spreadbore. Would bolt onto that manifold perfectly...

that sounds like a lot of carb for this application?????? what shape is it in and how much?

The top one has the thermostat housing clocking different for an A/C application. I'd consider a 1&3/8" primaries thermoquad from Demonsizzler.

The top intake is a 1979 or newer one. I had a picture of one of those before that used to be in the tech area. I dont know if its still there. Some of them had blockoff plates for the EGR on them so in a way it wouldnt really look wrong if you stuck one on it.

Dave, I would stay with the 2 barrel and points in IMO. For what your using it for you would be wasting your money . People forget that 2 barrel carbs were the bread and butter of engines for years. The only car I have that starts on the first hit is the one with the 2 bl. and points. I guess I'm old fashion and try to keep things simple. Plus your dealing with the best engine Chrysler ever built, why mess with it?

Tim, maybe your right. My main reason for swaping out the manifold and carb, is that the carb leaks and I tried fixing it and it didnt work. So I figured if I was replacing the carb, then I may as well us a manifold I have sitting here.

Let me ask another question, why not an electronic ignition with a 2 BBL? Or is there any reason to use alectronic ignitin in the first place. I have the manifold about off and it needs to be cleaned and sand blasted and re painted if nothing else.

Dave

any other suggestins?

Everyone complains about points but I personally love them. Ive never had starting problems on my points engines. Electronic ignition could be considered more reliable, but I dont think so people always have trouble with the boxes.

I think his point was just that you wont really get any extra power out of the electronic unit if your points are already working correctly, if you get anything its probably not worth it since you're not worried about power and the difference wont be noticeable (although you may find a difference would be due to a better timing curve, which would be noticeable but you could recurve your current dizzy).

I have the valve covers off. the ones in these more recent pics are not the ones that came on the engine. I have them off to be painted.
Here is a shot of the cvalve train and with the 2BBL manifold off of the truck.

It looks like some of the areas on the 2BBL are clogged?

what ya all think????

The other reason I was taking this 2BBL off, is because there are a LOT of unused areas. vacumn, ect that are all blocked off in one backwards way or another, see pics. They just piched the end of the (what ever its called there the EGR maybe) and then covered that exit with several plugs and it looks like CR@P.

I am honestly a horible mechanic. I HATE IT! due mostly in part to the fact that my hands do not work. this took me literally hours and my hands are unusable the rest of the day.

Thats why I love the body and paint, larger tools and no real issues. Just metal fab, welding, plasma and a little for the areas I was not talented enough to get straight.

But I hate unsightly engine bays, so this is the only other reason I tore this down.

suggestions from the pros.

By the way, O tried to PM him to see what a carb would cost and his inbox is full. I will try a thread notification.

Dave, the inside of that engine looks great, I wouldn't touch it. If you go with a TQ I got one I will give you, free.

Re: Which 4 BBL manifold & carb 4 project-pics attached? - 05/06/09 06:51 AM

I would just use the non-EGR manifold and get a spacer and put an Edelbrock on it. You will probably hear some on here say it won't work out but I added the spacer and put an Edelbrock on my '72 340 and it runs fine. Not a killer combo but the carb runs fine and reliably. If you don't want to do that just put on a spread bore Holley (won't need the spacer)

Thanks for the advise. I have sand blasted the early mod 4 barrel manifold and will see what carb I can afford.

OK, so here are the valve covers and manifold that I decided to use, the non EGR older one.

I also found this in my parts stash, its an Edelbrock carb. has the numbers #1407 on the side and looks like 0236???? any idea what CFM this is and why wont this work on here??? Its obviously too low and hits the manifold on the side. Can a spacer be used to lift it???

And I know the engine is not original, but what valve covers appear more original for this truck??? I painted and sand blasted both sets.

eddy 600 cfm manual choke. 0236 is the date code. A spacer will fix you up

Dave,
You also need the spacer because the manifold is for a spread bore carb (primary butterflies are smaller than the secondaries) and the Eddy is a square bore (all 4 butterflies are the same size)

Way too much square-bore CFM for your 318! You would only need either a 500 or 600 cfm square-bore or an 800 cfm T.Q., David.
