6 pak center carb/ 500 cfm/setup for big cams,Why Not ? - 06/15/08 07:14 PM

I have been running 6 packs by preference for many years. I have no problems getting them to run with big cams, but many do. The principle problem is the center carb. It is set up for factory cam specs and needs work to run with big cams. The end carbs are fine as is, outside of jet adjustments. I wonder if Holley would consider making a replacement in 500 cfm instead of 350 and with adjustable/replaceable bleeds, 50cc pump etc. In short, set up like one of their HP series 4 bbls, but would fit right in(undetectable) and give us folks running strokers some needed adjustability and CFM.(We won't get into manifold issues) I wonder what the demand would be, and how many orders it would take to get Holley to do it? Since they already make the 500 in a 2 bbl, it does not seem that the engineering end would be that cost prohibitive. A carb like this could revitalize interest in the six pack. Anybody else think they would be interested? Maybe we can run a survey and I will call Holley, it's a long shot, but might be worth it! Lee.

I love this topic!!! I had Promax Mill and blend the choke horn of my 350 center, and they said it increased the CFM in excess of the +50 CFM that I anaticipated. If I recall it was closer to +75 CFM. Either way, that mod combined with some of their other goodies worked well enough to feed my 493" stroker to the tune of 681 HP at 5500 rpm.

I remained curious as to how much more HP could be tweeked out of a stroker motor with a deep ported aluminum sixpack intake with the same thing done to a 500 CFM carb.

I needed my motor to have some street manners, so it is camed accordingly with a hydraulic cam. I know if I put the right mechanical roller in there it would have broken into the 700+ HP range...How much longer are you guys going to wait until one of you just has to take a nice stroker motor to the limit with a Holley induction and a deep ported Edlebrock intake? That hyped-up Six Shooter pales in comparison in this neck of the woods! Inquiring minds want to know.

Once modified, the factory style set-up blows those little six-shooter carbs away! Period. These cars themselves are out-dated, but I've always had an affinity for "goofing" around with them...

Damn JBC, I'm impressed! I would like to know your combo, especially the cam specs! I did not dyno mine, but in a 4100lb car with 3.54 gears, mine went 11.48 on slicks thru the mufflers. I'm figuring about 565 at the flywheel and I am running a med-large solid cam. I really would like to know who could work over the Edelbrock intake for max performance, I am sure the FAST guys probably know. I would like to see if Holley would be receptive to the idea of a bigger center carb, but I would not bet on it. Still, it would be good to say that I have X amount of people who are interested when I call them. Lee.

"6-Packs To Go" use to do a nice job modifying the factory carb's, but I don't believe there still in business anymore... too bad.

The cam is a hydraulic roller with .595 lift intake and .579 lift exhaust with 1.6 to 1 rockers. The durations at .050 is 246 in & 252 ex on a 108 degree LSA.

The intake was stage 2 deep ported by Hughes engines. They have done even more extensive work on these intakes since then. The 440 EZ heads are also stage 2 ported by Hughes. It's a surprising little beast with over 500 ft pounds of torque at 2500 rpm peaking at 682 ft lbs at 4800 rpm.

I have had no issues with my 410-6 and a strong solid, now roller. I got fed up with the old style base plates and promax has a pair of there billet bases on the way. I got lucky to get them shipped today.

I went to a wide band on each side and figure this is a good move.

No point in bs-ing, Ive had a idle screw issue with one plate idle screw, not sure who or when or why but on was sunk all the way in, broken tabs on the idle screw, used a drem and small bits, got it all the way out, didnt have a tap to clean the threads, used a proper sized screw thought it was steel to very gently chase it clean, no issues untill the in reality the al screw broke off, got it drilled out...checked the web for the screws ect...found the promax plates and like what they have to offer...costly but on the way.

But back to the matter at hand didnt ford have a 500 cfm center carb?? On a tripower deal at one time?

My intake is gutted about as much as possible, next is the sheet metal route.

Heres your base for the 500 cfm center...Holley list #4412, needs a few mods to get the correct vac to the end carbs, and some maching on the top plate, but it can and has been done.
