U Joints - If youre going to do it right..... - 06/14/08 10:48 PM

Some opinions please.......

3500 lb car, 400 hp,23 spline, liberty modified 4 Speed, Dana 60, 4.10 gears, BFG drag radials.......

Street strip car.......More HP coming in the future. I plan to powershift ALOT.

7290 or 1350 joints. I have NO driveshafts now, or yokes or joints, so I am starting clean.

Which would you go with?

What applications should I look for for a driveshaft to modify to install in my car? Thinking about buying a junk yard shaft in good shape, with 1350 joints. Do all 1 ton doge trucks use 1350 driveshafts? (I dont think they do)

I've been looking for a good deal on a MP 7290 driveshaft kit, but cant seem to find one other than retail.

Anyone build their own 1350 driveshaft?

For a decent deal on a new driveshaft check out Driveshaft Specialist, Inc. or Denny's Driveshaft.

I can't really advise on which U-joint setup you should go with so I'll leave that to someone with better knowledge than me.

I bought the 1350 Nitro shaft and yokes from Driveshaft Specialists. Great company to do business with.

My kis bought one from Denys.Got the big yokes. Its a nice piece and heavy duty. Not cheap but by the time you buy a kit get it assembled and welded and balanced its about the same price. His has been in for 4 years and seen a lot of street miles and 1/4 blasts. Its in a 4500 pound 62 300 and will soon get hammered by a 550 BB.Rocky

On the rear with the big joint get the yoke that has regular U bolts instead of the straps.I have one for my 489 that came off my old Imperial rear.Rocky

the 7290 seems more the adequate, also less of a headache for what you want.
i havn't made enough power yet to break the smaller u-joint. put a loop
on the front half and call it a day. on a side note: avoid the u-joints
with the grease nipple on them.. they tend to crack in that area.

I agree with the non grease fitting joints.I snaped a new one in less than week.I use Brute Force now.If you are getting a new shaft anyway get the big joints. You always want to make more power.Rocky

Use the 1350 stuff. A 1350 driveshaft costs the same as a 7290 shaft.
