727 torqueflite high psi relief

Did a 1966 torqueflite 727 come without the 3/8 ball/spring relief valve?

I was looking for an unmolested valve body to use in a rebuild and found a nice one in a 66 parts transmission. Surprised to see that there was no relief valve when I took it apart for cleaning?

The relief ball didn't arrive until late '68.

The '66 VB had some issues , look for a crack shown in the pic below and, if you intend to do many manual 1-2 upshifts, an orifice restrictor shown by the red arrow needs to be drilled out to at least 1/8".

Any advice on drilling out the restictor? Looks like any drilling will have to be done at an angle?

one can use a spare chuck and turn it with your hand, going up a couple drill sizes at a time, or use a cordless drill at a somewhat slow speed, [also a couple sizes at a time.]
lightly clamp the valve body in a vice, using two pieces of unmolested plywood [without dirt, metal chips, etc embedded in them] covered with two pieces of clean cardboard, will hold it at an angle that is comfortable for you to drill.
just be sure you don't use anything in the clamping process that will mark up the valve body.

I drill it at the original angle with a 1/8" bit then, when the bit goes through to the channel, I walk the bit up vertical to remove the remaining partition.

John , what causes the valvebody to crack there ?

I dunno, I've seen at least two crack in the same place.
