440 auto to 4 speed............. - 06/14/08 08:26 PM

i got a good 440 out of a 75 new yorker and put it in our 71 charger and bought most all the parts to convert to a 4 speed
it was pointed out that i could not put a 4 speed behind a 440 that had a cast crank because of balancing
i bought a 11 inch flywheel but was told cant use it behind the cast crank 440
am i screwed here now??

No, they make a balanced flywheel for the cast crank engines. There's a diagram floating around on here showing where to drill holes in a forged crank flywheel to balance it for a cast crank. Also I think all the big 4sp places have them as well, passon, brewer, even keisler I think.

if you go looking for a stock,440 cast crank 'wheel, here is what the factory did to balance them:

this one came off a 1977 400 in a truck. 400 and 440 share the same inbalance on the cast crank.

What is this one from? Cast Crank? What engine? Ignore what some junkyard dog wrote on it.

I dont think you have a pilot pushing in a cast crank or a deep enough hole to install one. Check and make sure!!

They make one specifically for use in an auto trans crank. It's shaped a little different and sits in the hole for the torq converter snout. Only mod you have to do is trimming the tip of the input shaft a little shorter.

Thanks, that was what I originally id'd it as due to the two drilled holes and the paint stick marking(junkyard dog was right). But then I saw a picture somewhere else that supposedly showed one of these and the drawing a few post up. Neither one shows the scallops. That made me wonder if I had something else.

Sorry for Hijacking the thread. I thought maybe I had the flywheel he needs. Guess not.
